After the unanimous bi-partisan Town Council vote on November 9th to approve funding for appropriation of two new sorely needed Fire Engines for our residents, James R. Miron remains unavailable and unwilling to sign the emergency purchase order.

We trust and pray that members of the Town Council lead by Council Chairman Mike Hendrick will do the right thing and put this tyrant in his place once and for all.
This issue highlights the question on most readers minds: Just how much more damage will James R. Miron do before he leaves office???

That worthless bastard. I watched the video. All that has to happen is the purchasing agent as to go to the mayor and get the mayor to deem it an emergency to waive the competitive bid process. That’s all he has to do. This will save us thousands of dollars, probably tens of thousands of dollars. What a disgrace.

Jez it appears you broke the story of Miron wanting to buy the trucks just before the election. Now that he lost it appears he doesnt want them anymore. Is it humanly possible that someone could be that shallow and stupid or do you think he is just that arrogant and vindictive?

I strongly urge that a search warrant is obtained so Miron’s home can be searched for Town property. I just find it very strange that John Norko, who had a fine reputation while being employed in Bpt., has already put in his resignation. I believe he knows a lot and wants out. I am so excited by the many calls I am receiving too the effect that, “Syl, one thing I like about the out come of this election is that you are not moving away.” If Miron somehow made it, my home was going up for sale the next day, and many friends in Stratford were so upset when I mentioned that to them. I want to inform the town that the fire chief Miron hired is not qualified to do the job. Ellen Murray is most qualified and she should of been given the job. We need to clean this town out of all the cronies and the nepotism Miron brought to town. This really belongs in “Believe it or Not.”

I had so hoped it was done. It must be the water in this Town.

It is no surprise that Miron is refusing to sign the order. Anyone who has read this blog more than once shouldn’t be the least bit shocked. The only thing Miron really concentrates on is revenge. And even that he does poorly. The order will be signed by Miron or it will be signed by the real mayor on Dec 14th.
But, as usual, Mayor Moron is directing his vengeance at the taxpayer and voter. It is us who will suffer another month of faulty and inadequate fire equipment. This is a project former fire chief Jay Cybart work on for YEARS. It is what got him terminated. He wanted to finally order the equipment but Miron wanted it saved till he could use it to his own advantage…like around election time. Just like he delayed reconstruction of Huntington Road. (Oh? You didn’t know that the project was approved and funded by the State 4 years ago?).
But back to the issue at hand. In Miron’s mind, he is “punishing” the firefighter’s union for backing Harkins. Guess what, Jimmy? Each and every member of the union will be collecting a paycheck long after yours have stopped.
We also anticipate that moments after Harkins signs the order, some die-hard members of the DTC will scream and moan about some shady deal between Feehan and Harkins or Harkins and the union or Feehan and the union or all three. To that end, the Council, Feehan, Chief Cavanaugh (like that would EVER happen) or Harkins should publish the quote and clearly specify what New England Fire Equipment Co’s finder’s fee is.

You are absolutely correct. Aside from her qualifications and experience (which probably surpasses most Fire Chiefs in the State) wouldn’t it be very, very nice for Stratford to have a female fire chief? Especially someone who was more concerned about us than kissing the mayor’s butt.
(Sadly, Manchester CT beat us to the first female chief years ago.)

There is so much wrong with the way the Town has been run that it is almost impossible to know where to begin.
For example, nearly $1 Million of LoCip funding has been squandered on Town Hall renovations and granite curbs on Broad Street. That alone would have bought two new firetrucks. Where the granite came from is still a question.

I claim no particular expertise in fire equipment, procedure or methods. But, when firemen say they need equipment to do their jobs and keep us and themselves safe…well, I gotta go with the firemen over the politicians.
And once again, we see politics entangled in public safety. Here you have a Fire Chief (supposedly the most expert employee in Town regarding fire safety) telling residents in a published letter in the Post that everything is just peachy keen in the FD and Miron has it all under control while slapping his own Assistant Chief around in the press. Yet a mere 10 days (and one election) later he is standing before the Council begging for new equipment because the existing equipment is inadequate, dated (did I hear 1979?) and malfunctioning.
I have no particular problem with a Town resident (Jim Feehan) making a few bucks. I have a huge problem, however, if it cost taxpayers more than if it were competitively bid and we could have saved more than say, 10% on a $900,000 deal. (In my way of thinking, that’s a whole ‘nother fireman, cop, teacher, pw employee or maybe 2).

Kubec specifically asked the Fire Dept management to declare emergency.
The council can not by charter interfer with day to day administration,
which by charter is the Mayor purview.

The collection of a finder’s fee would be wholly inappropriate. Finder’s fees are not intended to provide double income for the finder.

Council has the right during the “absence” to have the council chair become the acting mayor…….Miron is being totally irresponsible and immature going off to lick his wounds while the staff is resigning…he is not putting Stratford or the safety of the residents first-he never has. We are fortunate to be rid of him on Dec 14.

The purchase of two fire trucks may be still be held up in a debate over whether the need constitutes an emergency.
The Town Council voted Monday night to allocate from the council’s contingency fund $5,000 needed to allow the purchase of two fire trucks used as demonstration models by Smeal, the manufacturer.
The Fire Department was originally given $450,000 to buy a truck. Another $350,000 was allocated in a capital plan.
The price for the two trucks is $805,000.
However, the direct purchase from the manufacturer would be done without competitive bidding, so the allocation was approved pending Mayor James R. Miron declaring an emergency so the bidding ordinance could be waived.
“I’m not going to waive a quarter million dollars in bids when the Fire Department has fought for over four years to get the specs the Fire Department says it needs,” Miron said Wednesday, and that the situation did not constitute an emergency. And exactly how did firing Jay Cybart help the cause, Jimmy?
Miron was not at Monday’s council meeting. Why should he be? It was only about honoring Police and Firefighters and public safety.
Town ordinance requires any purchase or contract in excess of $7,500 be put out to bid.
“This is 100 times that,” Miron said.
Miron said the trucks earmarked for purchase are not those the Fire Department designed, and doing the purchase as an emergency “makes a mockery” of the bid process. And Lord knows the bid process is so important to you. How many bids did you get from Heather for the awful logos, stationary and Town tag line? How many bids did you get before you gave $180,000 worth of consulting to BL Company? You hypocritical idiot.
“If the next guy wants to do it, he can,” Miron said, referring to Mayor-elect John Harkins, who takes office Dec. 14. LOL! Can’t say it, can you Jimmy? “The next MAYOR.”
Firefighters said trucks have broken down, requiring loans from departments in Milford and Shelton. The department’s reserve truck is a 1979 model. Does it have an 8 track player too?
Fire Chief James Cavanaugh, until asked to stop by Councilman Joseph Kubic (R-9th), repeated several times that the department’s preference would be to draft specifications for a truck from the ground up, but that purchasing the two demo models would quickly fill a need.
“I’m fervently against buying used apparatus for the Fire Department,” Cavanaugh said. Now here’s a guy who’s never influenced by politics….
The trucks have never been in service and never been used to fight a fire, Cavanaugh and Assistant Chief Daniel Ross said.
Ross, too, expressed preference for trucks designed to meet specifications.
But in an effort to fill a years-long need for new apparatus, firefighters searched online and found other options. Really? They Googled it?
One truck was tested in town, but firefighters did not feel it met their needs.
They then heard through New England Fire Equipment about the availability of two trucks Smeal had used to show its vehicles to potential buyers.
Another $100,000 would be needed to equip both trucks. Kubic said that could be appropriated at purchase.
The cost of one truck, built to spec, was $670,000, Ross said.
Forget it. Nothing will happen until after Dec 14th.

Stratford residents demand more hydrants after fatal September fire

STRATFORD — Residents of a secluded North End neighborhood where two people died during a September fire that required water tankers be set up because of the lack of hydrants demanded Monday that the town provide more hydrants to prevent future tragedies.
Neighbors who live near the fire that broke out Sept. 25 at 48 Kathleen Drive and claimed the lives of two elderly people described standing helplessly nearby on the dead-end street and witnessing a “burning inferno that soared high above the trees.”
The bodies of the two were found the next day inside the charred shell of the house, owned by Ronald Everett and his wife, Sandra M. Harris-Everett. The 88-year-old mother of Sandra Harris-Everett and an uncle who were staying there died in the blaze, fire officials said. The Everetts were away when the fire erupted.
Neighbors told the Town Council Monday night they have been complaining for years that the single fire hydrant in their neighborhood was not enough to provide protection for their 50 home-community near the Shelton border.
“Five fire engines and all on-duty members of the Stratford Fire Department that night rushed to the blaze,” said Steve Otfinoski, who resides near the site of the fire…
But wait for it…it only gets better:
…Cavanaugh said. “As to why there has been only one hydrant there all these years, I really can’t answer that.”
Right. What would a Fire Chief know about the placement of fire hydrants?

What we actually need are some heroes in Stratford. Captain Joe McNeil and Assistant Chief Tom Murray are excellent starts. Let’s hope John Harkins can come close to their stature.

John Buturla’s two main qualities as Police Chief were being Rich Buturla’s brother and doing anything Miron wanted. After Dec 14th those qualities will be eliminated.
We already know that he has failed as a leader of officers. 92% of the police officers voted “no confidence” in him.
Buturla, along with McCarthy and Cavanaugh, simply chose the wrong career path; Miron’s way. To a lesser extent, so did Riddenhour and Maffet. They chose Miron over their own departments.
You lead by example and by protecting your own. You don’t vilify and discredit your staff in the press (as Cavanaugh did), fire them (as McCarthy did) or have them arrested (as John Buturla did).

I believe getting rid of a police chief is EXTREMELY difficult.
The workers do not fire the chief, unless they can prove criminal
violations. Even then
1 – It takes higher authority than a mayor.
2 – There needs to be formal charges.
3 – The politically appointed prosecutors / and-or U. S. Attorneys
have to be willing to ACT.
4 – Finding a State or Federal Judge willing to take on “connections.”
5 – Complaintants better be sooooo clean they squeek when they walk.
6 – Friendly press would help.
7 – Somebody in higher authority has to have motive to OK.

Our current Mayor and his administration has FAILED to provide honest LEADERSHIP for everyone in Stratford. He has also FAILED to provide honest leadership of the Democratic Town Committee.
He has taken no responsability for anything that has gone wrong in our town.

There was a question posed at Christ Church that I was unsure
of how to honestly answer, in no small part because we were
only given 30 – 45 – 60 seconds to answer.

Every car and truck has blind spots, and motorcycles are so small,
and some riders will speed and pass faster than many people can
react, unless they can HEAR the Motorcycles.
Motorcycles are nosier as and after they pass people, however the
loud noise can project to oncoming or traffic ahead of the rider.
A neighbor has a bike or a visitor drives a bike and it IS noise nusance
when it road past my home, not unlike the over head jets which have
awakened me at 2 – 3 – 4 am, except the motorcylce is normally at a
decent evening hour.
Mr. P’s gets a few “Hells Angels” and the local “Wolf Pack” among other
groups of mostly wannabees. (Mostly – not completely – cleaned up.
Some are related to Stratford police or CT political justice people &
families of political people, especially the outlaw in-laws.)
However there are many business men and women who ride motor
cycles recrationally.
The noise from motor cycles is a nusance.
However I believe, without that noise, there would be MORE accidents!
The LAW recognizes there is a need for noisy motorcycles for safety.
Some bikers intentionally make the BIKES noisier than the law allows,
in part because of saftey and in part because of their ,,,, personalities
….. which make me look like a highly rational conformist.
The people of OSNA are home owners who spend rediculous amounts of
money on renovations to make sure their homes are HISTORICALLY correct,
the same way BIKERS love their BIKES and spend extra for the CHROME and
PAINT and nuances.
Most hate MR. P’S – Hards Corner Cafe.

It is an issue for the Department of Motor Vehicles, just as emissions and seat belts are regulated. You cannot stop motorcycles at the border and make them turn around if they are too loud or the rider wears no helmet.

While for the most part I wholeheartedly agree with you, we will be stuck with quite a bit of damage leftover from Mayor Moron. John Buturla, James Cavanaugh and Maurice McCarthy being some examples. Not to mention at least 3 serious ongoing lawsuits.
As we saw today, John Buturla still has his enemies list intact and Cavanaugh can’t tell the difference between a lie and the truth. McCarthy will simply do whatever it takes to keep his job and pension (talk about double dipping) no matter how it effects citizens.
Hopefully, Harkins will..ummm…errr…terminate, some of these problems.
However, there are others that have and will continue to plague the Town and will consume a lot of time and money. Raymark waste, SAEP (and toxic waste), LBW (still), the Theater and, of course, a budget in the midst of the worst recession in living memory.
At this point I do not think the Town nor John Harkins can afford politics as usual. Whoever he appoints/hires must be competent, honest, energetic and above all efficient. That pretty much eliminates anyone Miron hired.

about TERM LIMITS. I can pick up Hard Copy from Gail for $ 8.50.
I asked for the Term Limits opinion in electronic attachment format.
I also looked at the Recall opinion in the C.R.C. # 2.
I have consistently writen the attorneys and the parties are after the
RIGHT TO PETITION / REFERENDUM, which is legal under the Special
Act Charter, but not in the Home Rule Act, which Burturla opines our

Next time, listen with BOTH ears when a discussion takes place. The reserve 1979 pumper was bought by the town within the last two years, NOT 1979. It was purchased from GK in Watertown, CT. It was traded into that company when the Thomaston FD purchased a new pumper from GK. So, there is the answer to your question.
In 1996, a plan to set a schedule to replace the old fleet was put into motion with the purchase of 2 new pumpers. After receiving these 2, the FD was looking to replace a pumper aproximately every 5 years unil the fleet was dependable. The next apparatus purchase was in 2000, when the fleet was in dire need of updating due to numerous break downs. This pumper was a DEMO PUMPER bought from the manufacturers factory (Pierce) & dealer. After purchasing a new pumper & ladder truck, the replacement program was once again talked about with no result. The 1979 reserve/spare was quickly purchased due to break downs followed by Another used truck from NJ to also be used as a reserve/spare.
So, a year later (WITH MUCH MONEY SPENT TO TRY TO DISCREDIT THE FIRST APPARATUS COMMITEE and a consultant to tell the fd what they need) and still no new fire apparatus.

Let’s see: A stamford fireman was the Town Council Chairman
2005 – 2007
2004 – 2005 he finished out Jamison Scott’s term
2003 – 2004 he sat out a year then circumvented term limits
1997 – 2003 he served 6 years on town council, and about 1999 -2001 he
and Kronenberg has a little issue where he got arrested, and then she
was run out of the town council and then run out of town.
This arrest had to do with alledgedly bidding while being on a town
council, where town councilors are/were not supposed to get ANY
money from the Town (despite a different Chairman serving while his
very nice wife worked for the council.
The Mayor had refused to sign an “emergency” waiver due to extra
$ 5,000 of the price of 2 Demo Fire Trucks, besides $ 100,000 for the
equipment.
(I wonder if the equipment is coming from the same company which
sold those “rounded gold bricks” for the Fire House 300 % over cost?

Here’s the thing about firefghters: They only want to save your life.
When you throw political sand in the works, the ones who suffer the most are us.
The rank & file of most fire departments think that the need to save lives is a priority with their administration and Town leaders as well. They do not comprehend that they can become a political chip in the game. Maybe sometimes they are too busy polishing stuff or playing high school games like “this is MAN’S work” to notice. Perhaps they are just not accustomed to being lied to. I have a feeling that our FD will eventually mature enough to be able to tell who is lying and who is not.
Their dilemma is much like the PD’s. They originally welcomed John Buturla as a professional. They learned the hard way. The FD is slowly learning about Cavanaugh. How many times do you have to lie to be thought of as a liar?
What is amazing is that New England Fire Equipment always seems to have the “best” prices in the continental U.S. It is a wonder they stay in business with such low profit margins….isn’t it?

Mayor James Miron and his administration understand and appreciate the importance of securing and maintaining quality fire equipment for the protection of our community and our firefighters.
As fire chief for the Stratford Fire Department, I want to assure town residents that they are safe and protected. We have the finest and best-trained firefighters in the state operating with a system that puts them at the scene of an incident within minutes of every call. Our current apparatus is older, I would agree, but it is functional, safe and effective.
New fire equipment has been funded at the request of Mayor Miron. Protective eye gear, replacement turn out gear and 36 new portable radios have been ordered for the department. A replacement pumper was purchased and equipped for $197,000 in 2008 as well as funding secured for a rescue pumper. Unfortunately, after repeated requests by the mayor, the Town Council did not provide adequate funding to purchase the badly needed pumper.
The responsibility for department morale and performance lies with the former leadership of the Fire Department, not with Mayor Miron. They had a responsibility to advocate for the fire service, to set priorities and see that they were funded. However, lack of funding in the past for equipment such as turn out gear and protective eye gear was not an administrative failure but one of Town Council neglect.
Mayor Miron has restored pride to the fire service by choosing to serve the people of Stratford and the needs of our first responders, not the demands of the public safety unions.
The negative statements in Assistant Chief Tom Murray’s letter about the Stratford Fire Department are untrue and have cast the department in an awfully bad light. I appreciate the opportunity to set the record straight. It is a pleasure to serve the residents of Stratford and lead this department of dedicated fire professionals.

The CT Post is reporting again that Mayor Jim Miron won’t approve the purchase of the the two fire trucks.
If Jim Miron wasn’t so childish and vindictive he would put his personal feelings aside and do what is right for this town.
Have mistakes been made in the past by the council? Yes. Have mistakes been made by the Mayor? Yes. Now get past it and as his final act as Mayor he can serve the town and provide them a benefit that will last 20 years. By giving the approval to purchase these trucks it would be the best thing Jim Miron ever did for Stratford.

I mean, really…gimme a break. Miron has never acted for benefit of anyone but Miron. He has always been vindictive and hateful. This time it was not only the PD and FD unions that rejected him but the voters as well. This is his payback. Payback is the most important thing to a Miron.
What Miron really should be mad at are the Administrators and DTC members who told him how smart he was and how he was going to win easily. They only fed his fantasies.
