Scoring the Debate

Voters needed

The debate last night at St Joseph’s was very well attended. The CT Post estimates about 200 attendees. Unfortunately, there weren’t many “regular” voters. Miron & Costello brought their cheerleaders. Costello’s cheerleaders were easily identified by the black T-shirts with Costello’s name in white (honest to goodness). Miron’s cheering section had Miron buttons (and a town paycheck). Harkins fans were much more difficult to spot; no buttons, no t-shirts, no hats. George’s fans were even more difficult to locate. Hardly anyone wore a sweatshirt and sweatpants.

Miron stuck almost exclusively to the talking points on his brochures. Most of them have been refuted and debunked on this site many times. Except for a couple of shill questions Miron had planted in the audience (“Tell me, Mr. Mayor, about your successful environmental programs.”). Those Smart Cars seem to get amazing political mileage too.

Poor George was called out at the very beginning about his accusations of Mafia connections to the candidates. Of course, George could not provide evidence.

Costello stuck to his talking points as well which essentially amounted to “trust me”.

Harkins remained calm and declined to become involved in the obvious bitterness. While there was very little raucous applauding when Harkins spoke, it did seem that he had the depth the other candidates did not have. At least Harkins seems to be aware that we are in the midst of the worst recession in living memory and that the Town funds do not come with a personal ATM card. Harkins campaign needs to do a bit more research. While Miron claims to have produced budget “surpluses”, Harkins needs to point out that they were minuscule (1% or less) and that they were the result of raising property taxes by 25.7% (not 12%) over three years.

The unfortunate candidates for 1st District Councilman were nearly shut out of the debate about issues. Dick Kennedy, the last minute replacement for Sue Collier (whom everyone knew was merely a placeholder), was woefully unprepared. Chris Barnaby had done his homework and valiantly attempted to get a few points across that any 1st District Councilman must; Opposition to airport expansion and reduced pollution.

The next debate/forum is sponsored by the Arts Commission and scheduled for Oct 1 at 7PM in Town Hall Council Chambers. Please, no togas!

That will be followed by Stratford Chamber of Commerce, League of Womens Voters and Stratford Rotary Club co-sponsoring a mayoral forum and candidate roundtable at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 21 at Stratford High School.

We hope that regular voters will attend and the cheerleaders sit on their hands.

    Update:

    Arts Commission cancels forum

    Written by John Kovach
    Wednesday, 30 September 2009 12:56

The Arts Commission Wednesday canceled a candidates forum scheduled for Thursday after two of the four mayoral hopefuls opted out.

Republican state Rep. John Harkins announced he would not attend immediately upon being informed of the event, his campaign calling it “inappropriate.”

Unaffiliated candidate Domenic Costello, the Republican nominee in the 2005 race, said Wednesday he also would not attend, saying the forum might run afoul of rules and cause controversy.

As of Tuesday, Costello had committed to attend.

That left Democratic incumbent Mayor James R. Miron and unaffiliated candidate George Mulligan scheduled to address the Arts Commission during its regular meeting Thursday at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers in Town Hall.

    Just Mulligan and Miron???

WOW… I actually would have PAID to attend that debate!!!

    Thanks Jeze,
I did tell the audience the CT. POST ad libbed from the Letter to the
Editor that I sent in, which the STRATFORD STAR published, and the
CT. POST composed the LETTER which was published, from quotes in
    my e-mail.
    MINOR OVER SIGHT by JEZE?

And Mr. Pedoto was insisting that I frame my response his way.
    MINOR OVER SIGHT by JEZE?

I mentioned the NATERA internet information about the FBI raid on the
Boston Avenue site and a NATERA in FL buying CESSNA for DRUG moves.
    Hmmm.
People reputed to be MOB connected, being the leading bidder on
a property which had been controlled by and actively involved with
2 stratford political parties, is not self evident of appearances?

I never intended the QUOTE to be PUBLISHED.
It was my QUOTE in the NEWSPAPER, but twisted by Mr. PEDOTO.

Marcia Stewart called me today, thanking me for actually addressing
the PYE ISSUES and telling me that I was refreshingly honest for the
Event. It was before I had a chance to call her to thank her.
Marcia Stewart said I should not have apologize about my surprize
and loss of concentration and she felt badly about Mr. Pedoto
    “badgering me.”
I told her I am fine with Mr. Pedoto.
I baited DOM, last week and got him.
Pedoto got me. It is politics.

  4. 4 1george1

I can not wait for the editted version of the debate on channel 79.
Would anyone record it for me.

Then I can put it on my website, with an “uneditted” version of PYE.

  5. 5 1george1

    Jeze,
If you had one of the 150 handouts, that were 2 pages and two sided,
it included about the top 20 pensions as of July 2008.

Rebutting Mayor Miron, I showed the dates of Retirements as of Jan
2008, whereas 100 % of those Police and Fire accrued their O. T. under
the Police and Fire Cheifs of Mayor Miron.

Joe McNeil is suspended, I believe, because he documented the top
    pensioner.

While I got zip applause most of the night from Mironites and their
figurative alledge co-conspirators, until I called out the audience as
85 % Democrats + Republicans + Town employees, and then some
    people gave me props.

I had 10 people give me props including an e-mail from one of Jeze’s
circle who wrote me to keep up the good work “George Mulligan
    tells it like it is.”

    I get the impression that
1 – You accept my challenge to debate me one on one about Mayoral issues?
2 – You want to invite me to Lunch?

It please me that my e-mail give you so much enjoyment.

    Sib,

I think it is a mistake to let Harkins & Dominic dictate issues.

    I intended on being present.
Miron was big on the issue.

He and I are 1/2 of the Mayoral Candidates.
So how could more than 1/2 the Candidate cancel, unless Miron did too?

I believes I would tear apart Miron one on one and was salivating
at getting the chance for him to have to meet me in his town hall,
with all of his employees and town committee people there to be
witness to exposing lie after lie after lie after lie and to set forward
POSITIVE VISIONS for Shakespeare Theater and the ARTS.

Over 10 people at PYE confirmed I did very well, despite a crowd of
Miron supporters and my brief loss of concentration on Pedoto question.

My handouts showed absolute facts from the Miron administration which
showed JIM MIRON is a LIAR.

Now it appears he is a COWARD TOO?

I am sending this INSULTING Challenge to Jim Miron to MAN UP.
One on one – I will eat his LUNCH, using FACTS and VISION!

I am also challenging DOM & JOHN.
One on one – I will eat their LUNCH.

    LIBRARY LOVELL ROOM:
    $ 35 an hour – two hour minimum – I prefer a 3 hour weekend forum
    $ 200 deposit.

I challenge all of them all on POLITICAL ISSUES (not personal) of
their individual and colllective Political COURAGE + ETHICS + INTEGRITY
+ PATRIOTISM + ISSUES realted to BUDGET – DEVELOPMENT
REVENUES + EXPENDITURES + TOWN CHARTER + ATTORNEYS

+ TAXES + PROPERTY VALUES / GRAND LIST and more.

The Donkey and elephant have been replaced by chickens and ostriches!
Does Stratford’s Lady Liberty have brown paper bags on the scales?

I challenge the CT POST EDITORIAL BOARD and reporters and the
STRATFORD STAR newspaper group to be MODERATORS and to
hold all of us accountable to the TAX PAYERS.

I have been challenging the CT. POST Editorial Board to put up or shut up
when they write about CIVICS, ELECTIONS, and INFORMED PUBLIC.
Conversely I praise Mr. Kovach, Mr. Musante and the Star, who have covered
the issues and diversity of positions far more than the CT. POST to inform the
    Public.

My perception, shared by many, is that the CT. POST appears to back regionalism
and John Harkins and does not seem willing to do anything to endanger their chosen part and will not OPENLY ENGAGE in TRUE UNEDITTED DEBATE!!!

I had PYE MEETING video taped & will be putting out an outline for a
SHAKESPEAREAN type play – “MIRON’S LIES and FAIRY TALES
of HARKINS with DOM’S DELUSIONS and Mulligan’s muck raking!”

I am calling out the INTEGRITY and courage of the Mayoral candidates
and responsible JOURNALISTIC OVERSIGHT by the POST and STAR.

I admit to being an outspoken JERK.
Despite Mr. Pedoto’s badgering me on answering the question
(the way he wanted me to answer it) it was an absolutely FAIR
question of an exact quote in an e-mail, which I had not intended
for publication, and was out of context, then and he has obvious
intent for using his own context.

Marcia Stewart called me, apologized for not reacting and shutting him down.
Howeverr – IT IS POLITICS and he got me to lose concentration. FAIR GAME!

Marcia thanked me for bring a FRESH VOICE to the PYE and hitting issues the
otheres ignored and important to PYE.
Even critics admit I stayed on POINT – had VALID perspectives AND facts AND
where I won last Wednesday, I held my own, in a audience of mostly Democrats
    and town workers.
People told me to be agressive and try to win, which frankly I have no illusions about, but one on one, man to man – Stratford people and every american group of people deserve to see and hear the turth, and not see or read EDITED (SOUND) BYTES.

    Thank you.

Dear Mayoral Candidates (or their representatives),

This message is to inform you that the Candiates Forum being held by the Stratford Arts Commission has been cancelled. After more than half the candidates backed out of the forum, we made the decision that it was in the best interest of the town to ask other organizations to give you the opportunities to share your opinions on Stratford issues related to the arts.

The e-mail post somehow became VERY, VERY JUMBLED.

However, it should give the readers an indication that
    1) I challenged Jim, Dom, & John.
    2) I teased & baited Jim.
    3) I challenge the CT. POST.

Oh, I just got off the phone with another PYE attendee.
He scored the comments of the candidates.
By his scoring, Dom got ZERO.
By his scoring, I came in 2nd.
He would not state who he felt was first or 3rd.
He scored based on NEW and DIFFERENT, information Germane
to the SUBJECT. That will get JEZE’S Attention! 8)

    – YO JEZE – you must have different “relevance” scoring criteria.
Jeze – wasn’t I very much relevant last night with my answers in
the 2, 3, or whatever minute time frame? 😉

His comments were negative about Mr. Pedoto.
However I actually like the fact that Pedoto does to me
(something like) what I do to the other candidates.

Except I try not to badger people into say what I want
    them to say.
It is far more fun debunking lies and getting good ideas.

    George,

    “MINOR OVER SIGHT by JEZE?”

I think I recall you posting something very similar here. Someday, I will look through your postings and find it. Nonetheless, it is difficult count how many times I’ve advised to not to throw things against the wall to see if they stick. This time it stuck to you.

It is difficult to blame Harkins or Costello for backing out of the Arts Commission “forum”. I wonder which one remembered that most of the Commission was appointed by Miron and was the only Commission to be funded this year (sorry, Longbrook Park Commission).

  9. 9 jezebel282

    George,

“Joe McNeil is suspended, I believe, because he documented the top
    pensioner.”

That was actually started by Shawn Farmer. Oh wait. He got arrested too.

I think you are wrong in any event. Anyone who has worked with Dick or Jim Miron for any length of time understands one of the chief driving forces behind their actions is revenge. They just bring it to a different level.

Just as Miron conducted an audit to specifically punish Pat Naylor (and NO ONE else), he is conducting this witch hunt against Captain McNeil (the Local 407 president), Shawn Farmer (the former Local 407 president) and Lt. Soto to exact revenge for his brother Christian Miron.

Somebody is going to pay, regardless of what it takes. It might as well be a union president.

YES… I AM talking about the fact that my favorite Council Member from Bridgeport has decided to NOT run (LOL… ok, campaign) anymore!!! 😥

  15. 15 1george1

    Jeze and bloggers.

Miron packed PYE with at least 50 % of the audience and many of
    the questions came from Democrats.
Mary Young – cute rehead – environmental program
Hal something – 90 + year ex-Yale Engineer on Pollution
    My buddy Joe Pedoto
    Christine on the Shakespeare Deal.

MIRON has learned to ignore the truth and accentuate the changes
to the problems caused by Dicks Miron + Burturla / Kelly / Florek +
    Norm + Harkins.

He will come over big on TV that he EDITS, because his employees
and committee people who depend on them for revenue show up
to keep their job, because if HARKINS actually does win and I do
not think he really wants it, payback is a ……
So you blogger are going to be stuck with at least 4 more years
unless you come out of hiding and brink MANY of your friends!

Harkins was the smoothest and scored some points on civility and
some of the things he did in Hartford.

Miron & Harkins partially nuetralized each other

Harkins had someone ask about the FAC
I stole that one from Harkins and made major points on PENSIONS
    and true costs.
I nailed Miron on he claims on O. T. – pension & some cutting unions
NOT working with him and others who do.

    Candidate forums this week

    Written by John Kovach
    Monday, 19 October 2009 11:04

Candidates will appear at three forums next week as the Nov. 3 municipal election moves closer on the horizon.

Thursday, the League of Women Voters will publish its Voters Guide, with information on all Stratford races, in The Stratford Star.

The Old Stratford Neighborhood Association, in conjunction with the group Save Shakespeare, will host a mayoral candidates forum Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 7:30 p.m. in the parish house of Christ Episcopal Church, 2000 Main St.

Forum organizers said Democratic incumbent James R. Miron, Republican primary winner John Harkins and independent candidates Dom Costello and George Mulligan have all accepted invitations to participate.

The event, which will be moderated by Sheldon Gerarden, is free and open to the public.

“The Old Stratford Neighborhood has traditionally been engaged in the civic life of our town,” association President Michael Bingham said in a press release. “Our members and neighbors count on our neighborhood group to help them with the information they need to make important decisions about issues confronting our neighborhood and our community. Our Candidates Forum is an important part of that mission.”

Additional information is available at oldstratfordneighborhood.blogspot.com.

    SaveStratford

Also on Tuesday, Town Council candidates in the 1st, 3rd and 4th districts are scheduled to meet in a forum organized by SaveStratford.

Stratford Star Editor John Kovach will moderate the proceedings, starting at 6:30 p.m. at Baldwin Center.

No incumbents are seeking re-election in those three districts.

Candidates in the 1st District are Democrat Richard Kennedy and Republican Christ Barnaby.

In the 3rd District, John Fahan is the Democratic nominee, Matt Catalano is the Republican. Mulligan, also running for mayor, is on the ballot as an unaffiliated candidate.

In the 4th District, Democrat Jason Santi, Republican David LeConte Jr., and unaffiliated candidate Michael Singh are contending for the seat. Singh lost a Democratic primary to Santi last month, but had already petitioned his way onto the ballot.

    Candidates Night Wednesday at 6:30

A mayoral forum and chance to meet the candidates will take place at Stratford High School Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 6:30 p.m., hosted by the Stratford Chamber of Commerce, the League of Women Voters, the Stratford Rotary and The Stratford Star, and sponsored by Flagship Networks and Bridgeport Fittings.

Candidates for Town Council, the Planning & Zoning commissions, and Board of Education will meet voters during a roundtable in the cafeteria.

The four candidates for mayor will then respond to questions posed by a moderator from the League of Women Voters in the Stratford High auditorium.

  17. 17 1george1

I have been getting new rules about Wednesday night.

No mention that Thursday will be Oronoque Village, also LWV.

No mention Friday 1:30 is taping for News # 12.

    Stratford mayoral hopefuls face off

STRATFORD — Topics ranging from the Shakespeare Theater to school test scores and controlling taxes were on the table Tuesday, as the town’s four mayoral candidates squared off in a debate that grew heated at times…”

This one is going on our list of all-time favorites:

“Members of the Republican-majority Town Council “have played Whack-a-mole with me as the mayor every time they got a chance,” Miron added.”

Poor Jimmy. We wonder how the 50+ people he fired felt when the mallet was in Miron’s hand.

    Next on the list:

“I don’t think the town can afford to (fire me).”

Actually, the Town can’t afford not to. The Town budget has gone from $145 million to $180 million under Miron’s “care”.

And then there is this one:

“Miron said Harkins was unaware of many details, and reliant on campaign workers to give him talking points.”

You mean like police officers, fire fighters, teachers, councilmen, public works employees, voters, parents, seniors, veterans, EMS volunteers? Those campaign workers?

That’s the difference, Jimmy, between your campaign and Harkins. Your campaign staff are comprised of people who’s paycheck depends on saying “yes” to you. Check your Contributors List.

We can hardly wait for tonight’s debate at Stratford High to see what else Mayor Moron can come up with.

Stratford mayoral candidates clash as debate gets personal
    By Richard Weizel
    STAFF WRITER
    Updated: 10/22/2009 12:09:06 AM EDT

STRATFORD — This time, the debate got personal. Even before it started, members of the town’s police union picketed outside Stratford High School, carrying signs that stated “Cops For (State Rep. John) Harkins. We Need Honesty and Integrity.”

When the forum started, Democratic Mayor James R. Miron, the town’s first mayor, who is seeking another four-year term, and his Republican challenger, Harkins, engaged in numerous heated exchanges during a nearly two-hour mayoral debate Wednesday night at Stratford High School.

But independent candidates Domenic Costello and George E. Mulligan pointed out a vote for either of the major party candidates would foster the same “political bickering” and partisanship that has plagued the town for years and stopped any real change, including economic development, from taking place. All three challengers also said the mayor has failed on the town’s three major issues — development of the former Army Engine Plant, restoring the Shakespeare Theater and stopping proposed runway expansion at Sikorsky Memorial Airport. Miron insisted he has made “significant progress” on all three projects.

The debate, co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters, the Stratford Chamber of Commerce, the Stratford Rotary Club and Stratford Star, was attended by nearly 300 people and was in stark contrast to the relatively polite candidate forums that have been held over the past few weeks.

Harkins wasted no time going after Miron for what he said were the mayor’s public attacks on individuals, on everyone from Superintendent of Schools Irene Cornish to theater producer William Hanney, who was selected by the Town Council this summer to renovate and operate the long-shuttered Shakespeare Theater — a deal Miron opposes and refuses to sign.

“I want to restore civility, integrity and transparency to the mayor’s office,” Harkins said. “The current mayor has called the school superintendent sleazy and screamed at Mr. Hanney after a public meeting in Town Hall when he was selected by the council to renovate the theater and be its operator. Those kinds of outbursts are an embarrassment to Stratford, and are the talk of the town all over the state.”

When Miron responded that “tonight, I want to dispel the notion I ever yelled at Mr. Hanney,” someone in the audience yelled out “I was there and yes you did.” Hanney and town council leaders previously confirmed the incident occurred. Hanney said Miron yelled at him that as long as he was mayor, Hanney would “never get the chance to develop the (Shakespeare) theater.”

When the question of nepotism was raised, many in the audience laughed uncomfortably, as the issue has sparked controversy. Harkins criticized Miron for engaging in “nepotism and cronyism by making politically motivated appointments,” alluding to the June 2006 hiring of Police Officer Justin LoSchiavo, the son of former Deputy Police Chief Joseph LoSchiavo and Human Resources Assistant Linda LoSchiavo. LoSchiavo was hired despite warnings by doctors he had a serious seizure disorder and that he should not be hired. LoSchiavo crashed his patrol car into four vehicles while suffering a seizure this past June.

“That’s why I have the support of the police and fire unions, because they know I am committed to public safety and will work hard for the proper equipment and apparatus for them to do their job,” Harkins said. “There have been six deaths relating to fires in Stratford in the past year, the most of any town in the state, and that is a disgrace.”

Miron countered that the unions are supporting Harkins because “I have taken a tough stand on their pensions and have cut their overtime by 40 percent.” Miron also touted his record of keeping taxes low the past two years, emphasizing the town’s upgraded bond rating and budget surpluses for three consecutive years. He also criticized Harkins for saying he was running an “upbeat and positive campaign, and then coming out here and attacking me every chance you get.”

Costello, who ran as the Republican candidate four years ago, said listening to Harkins and Miron exchange personal barbs made him even more determined to win the election.

“I have been running for mayor for five years, walking to every home in Stratford, and as I have listened tonight I am more convinced than ever my decision to run as an independent was the right one. This is the kind of bickering and political partisanship that people have told me they are sick and tired of hearing. But this will continue under the Democrats and Republicans.”

Mulligan, continuing his theme of pounding away at union pensions and the lack of economic development, got the biggest laugh of the night when he was asked how he would solve the pension shortfall. “Well, a winning Powerball ticket might just cover it,” Mulligan said.

Admittedly, I had to leave the debate a tad early. The person who accompanied me has an extremely low tolerance to bullshit and when Miron started talking…well it was just too much.

When Miron responded that “tonight, I want to dispel the notion I ever yelled at Mr. Hanney,” someone in the audience yelled out “I was there and yes you did.””

    Is there a question there?

The lies started as soon as Miron opened his mouth. It was amazing. I think Harkins and Costello were kind of shocked at the blatancy. Not George though. George seemed to expect it and if you actually listened to George, he made great sense. He might even get 35 votes this year.

Attacking doesn’t seem to be John Harkins forte. He’s just not very good at it. Too calm and forthright. He also likes to think before he speaks. Not like Miron. Attacking and vengeance is what Miron and his crew does best. Like the negative mailings he’s been sending out.

Oh…one other note. This Miron statement: “Miron countered that the unions are supporting Harkins because “I have taken a tough stand on their pensions and have cut their overtime by 40 percent.””

I have met dozens and dozens of Stratford police officers. Not one, not a single one has EVER complained about overtime or pensions. They complain about horrible leadership, persecution and favoritism all the time, but never about pay.

  25. 26 1george1

I was 10 feet from Jim when he was screaming at Hanney.
Some of Jim’s spital landed a little short of myself and Hanney.
Jimmy had to walk past me to go towards his office.
The direction he was going when he approached Hanney to my right
and Jimmy to my left, and both in front of me.

I am still wondering why Jimmy’s police never put the name of the
person I told them I overheard a non regular point out
    “slashed someone’s tire?”

Mossman, had me arrested in 1998 when in approximately the same spot we
had a very brief exchange, that got most of the 120 attendees attention,
but was NOT reported in the POST, STAR, BARD, or REGISTER, whose reporters
were all within 30 feet and none considered it newsworthy?
Further not one person gave Discovery testimony to support Mossman’s police
report, which was even more dishonest than a Miron assessment of his Mayoral
    achievements and Town Finances.

Yes, Jeze, if people see and hear uneditted footage of the debate,
I anticipated many of the lies and boasts.

I had Fire Capt Murray shake my hand at end of night.
Approx quote: “George, I loved your answers.”

NOTE: I try to place blame on decision makers and try to accurately
portray particiapants. The unions KNOW Defined Contribution and NOT
Defined Benefit is appropriate, and they KNOW they share responsibility.
However, unions are GRANTED PAY – BENEFITS – PENSIONS by managers
who have to get more and by POLITICOS who gain contracts, fees, and
    customers ….
We also differ on the PENSION BOND.

I hope he OBEYS the TRAFFIC LAWS better than THAT!

Jim has the best talking points.
Jim actually went after me for the first time, by dismissing me and

What does that suggest, of ceasing to ignore me?

John looks and sounds the distinguished part, but Miron is out
right destroying him with overwhelming talking points and out
    right exaggerations, the JOHN is too G E N T L E and NOT

If the RTC is smart or if the R are smart and actually interested in
Winning, then they would have taped the events, and analyses
Miron’s talking point of his accomplishments
    and attacks on Harkins.
If they want to learn how to destroy Miron’s points, they would
take notes on how I take apart, with facts, specifics, and appeals
to peoples’ self interest and knowledge on Miron’s weakness.

Miron’s biggest weaknesses are his father and Burturla, along with

George, your lottery ticket comment was PRICELESS!!!!!! AWS

  28. 29 1george1

BELOW was a SOLICITED RESPONSE from a STRATFORD BUSINESS
OWNER who went to SHS expecting to back HARKINS.

I expect no one will acknowledge the accuracy.

However I already scored things the same way.

    ===============

    George:

You may be surprised by my analysis. I actually thought
Miron did the best as did my friend.
He was specific on issues and solutions.
I also thought he was positive about the town and never
criticized anyone without first being attacked.
I think he had good explanations for some of the things
he has been so criticized for in the town.
He also had solutions to problems to try to move the town
    forward. He has a plan.

We thought that you did the second best as you also hit on
the major issues in the town with solutions.
You were passionate and never criticized the others and you
brought some humor to the event to enforce points.
At times you got a little off the track and were not focused,
    (AGREED)
but you did a good job.

We thought Costello did the worse.
We felt he had no plan or vision for the town.
    He was disappointing.

    We did not like Harkins.
I do not think he directly answered any questions and he was very
negative on the constant attacks to Miron.
I thought he was catering to the town employees and unions which
he cannot do if he is to fix budget problems.
He avoided answering if he supported the theater contract and was
not specific on the pension issue.
I thought some of his attacks on Miron were petty. (BITCH SLAPPIN: gm)
Miron did a good job in clarifying how Harkins activities in Hartford had
not helped the town, such as voting against the film credit.
That was a very good point.

So, if we had to rank the performance it would be
    Miron, Mulligan, Harkins and Costello.
It is too bad there were not more people there than the usual insiders.
Maybe folks will see it on TV. (EDITTED or UNEDITTED? gm) 😦
We were impressed and surprised by Miron and got a new perspective
    on him.

Not sure who to vote for now.

We thought you were very good

  29. 30 jezebel282

    George,

They may have a point. Harkins is just not mean spirited like Miron is.

However, the film credit issue is meaningless. No one in their right mind thinks that the Nateras will follow through or the there are enough funds anywhere that could remediate that property within the next ten years or more.

As for negative, I just received my THIRD negative mailing about Harkins from Miron.

“We were impressed and surprised by Miron and got a new perspective
    on him. ”

He does lie well, doesn’t he?

  30. 31 1george1

I agree with the LYING, which stunned me that he denied yelling
at Hanney, which I believe both Kovach and Weizel reported.
There were also letters to editor.

    I was there.

I tried to confirm the unfunded was $ 240 m
    I know the Aug 2009 balance was $ 86 m+
That is 36 % fully funded.

Last time the portfolio was 65 % was 2007 or maybe 2008?
    Unfunded was $ 185 – 190 m & portfolio peaked around $ 110 m
    if I remember correctly.

Then unfunded went to $ 210s. This year it went to $ 240 m.

Jim did same thing in 2005 when his proposed budget was
    obviously over 10 %.
Just move decimal place over 1 unit.
He claim the proposed raise was 8 %. It was 12 %.

When I created the Bernie Madoff crack it was to offset Harkins
    very polished and squeaky demeanor..

However, despite me being prepared for many of Miron antics, he
completely surprized me with OUT RIGHT LIE ABOUT NOT YELLING
    at HANNEY.

I was stunned when I heard the numbers quoted by LWV Moderator
    on Fully Funded.

I am expecting Miron to Edit the tapes.

  31. 32 jezebel282

    George,

“I agree with the LYING, which stunned me that he denied yelling at Hanney, which I believe both Kovach and Weizel reported.”

You need to spend more time with Miron. Anyone that has ever worked with him wouldn’t be stunned at all. In fact, with Miron, lying is to be expected.

One of his first accusations about Harkins was that Harkins hadn’t done enough to increase ECS funding. Someone should mention that there are 147 State Representatives vying for the same ECS dollars. I haven’t heard Miron accuse Terry Backer (who is in the majority party) of that. But even starker than that, Miron has sought to significantly cut BOE funding every single year. He has even directed Public Works to ignore repairs, maintenance and improvements in every school building. He has failed to acknowledge every single invitation to discuss the BOE budget and has not even bothered to attend budget workshops on the BOE budget.

This approach may be popular with some seniors, but when families stop moving to Stratford (and they are) senior’s property values go down.

But as we all know by now, it’s just another Miron lie.

  32. 33 phineast

    George,
Go back and ask your businessman if he feels that lying about a publicly witnessed event deems a person credible. Miron’s biggest problem is Miron. He is not credible-even the courts have deemed him as such. He has told so many lies that he can’t keep them straight so he keeps tripping on them. So he is the real question- How is an average citizen to know when he is lying or telling the truth???? Unfortunately for him the average citizens think he is lying all the time-because they don’t have the time to verify what he spews-interestingly when dealing with Harkins Jez is correct-he is not mean like Miron. If you actually listened to what he said with regard to the unions-he put them on notice-he needs their cooperation with regard to salaries, bene’s and pensions. Peroid. He has a kinder way of phrasing it and will follow the rules-where Miron says he can do whatever the f#@k he want because he’s the mayor and Miron thinks that rules are for other people and if they don’t suit him he’ll change them or break them(it’s a life long pattern with him-remember when he made the historic district comm. an illegal commiss. and then changed the rules? or violated his OWN language of the charter or the times when he violated financial issues with regard to unauthorized spending??) and again he can do whatever the f@#k he wants because he is mayor. Well, in my book, Miron’s behavior performance and attitude are unacceptable. If Harkins pulls anything like that I’d be working to get him out too, but in 13+ years he hasn’t pulled the horse pooh that Miron has in 4 years. Was the insight this man got the truth or a lie????? I’m betting it’s based on lies. It is the on thing Miron does well.

  33. 34 pcsperling

“Oh…one other note. This Miron statement: Miron countered that the unions are supporting Harkins because ‘I have taken a tough stand on their pensions and have cut their overtime by 40 percent.’”

OMG, OMG, OMG! He’s done what? Again, put down the bong, Mr. Mayor, cuz that ganja is doing something to your brain and it ain’t good!

I’d love to hear the police officer’s take on that!!!! He lies so much I think he truly believes it all.

I received a call tonight – I guess the re-election workers are working on republicans now…. I politely advised the woman that my house supports John Harkins – her response “good luck with that” and she hung up! I couldn’t help but be humored by this – calling to ask me, Patricia Clark Sperling, if I was going to pledge my support to Miron!!!! I think not!

  34. 35 1george1

I concur with Jeze, Phin & PCS.

My friend the businessman was going just by what he saw and heard
    during the Stratford HS Debate.

Miron won the debate, I agreed.
I thought I did well. He had me second.

We were both surprized by Harkins and Dom kinda being steam rolled.
Both of them scored offensive points.
However Miron countered very well on both of them, and he had an
overwhelming list of talking points which improved with each Debate.

Further there were more timetabled ribbon cuttings, grand openings,
    events, and situations.

John, Dom, and I knew Miron was lying,

However, Jimmy has 4 years of controlling information and he knows
facts, even better than I do.
Further, Jimmy is unconstrained from lying.

Dom and John were completely broken up by Pinnochio’s nose and
my comparison – go to Channel # 12 video Tape or on # 612.

I think Jimmy made a conscious decision to not come after me and
    concentrate on Dom & John.

Each of us gave another a compliment here and there. When I gave
Jimmy a compliment, it was usually to make sure I touted it was my
idea, which Jimmy implemented, which was one of my strategies to
cut into Jimmy’s litany of accomplishments.

Another strategy was to go after actual dates of when something
stopped and did not go forward, allowing him to build a timely list,
of things that should have been fixed years ago.

During the Channel # 12 taping I finally brought up DICK MIRON &
DICK BURTURLA’s involvment from 1980s and my Letter to Editor
in both the STAR & POST, got my licks into FLOREK and several
    others (indirectly)

Jimmy is not well liked by the man and women on the street.
His father has some VERY LOYAL supporters. However he is
also well known for his behind the scenes affect on the Town.

The Burturla brothers profile is high, and I also name dropped
Berchem Moses as we do NOT know who they send the BILL
on the AIRPORT or AVCO, since they represent Bridgeport &
    Stratford …….

I have people stopping me at Shopping Centers, Barber shop,
Town Hall, Library, gas stations, restaurants, birthday parties,
Debates, Functions and other things telling me that it is
refreshing to have someone tell the truth ….

People from Town Hall, Police, Fire, PW, Library, Board of Ed,
Health, Community, Rec, Historic / OSNA, PYE, SaveStratford,
LWV, Chamber, Oronoque, Newpapers, Broadbridge condo,
Tide Harbor, ST. Marks, ST. James, Stratford Baptist, United
Methodist, ST. Joseph, Town Committee members, Candidates,
State people, some feds, and others quietly compliment me
for stepping up and informing the Public.

I accomplished more than I thought I could do.

I wonder if my SECRET PLAN to be ELECTED MAYOR will WORK?

  35. 36 1george1

Friday’s debate can be seen on channel # 612 on demand.

I understand the 4 Debates can be seen on “archive.”
    Google: Soundview Communications, Bridgeport, CT.
    Go to WEBSITE
    See Archive on lower left.
    Click Stratford.
    Videos are in sequence.
I accidentally gave wrong date on OSNA.
    Correctable tommorrow

PYE – I saw. It was unedited.

Yet to see OSNA – STRATFORD HIGH + ORONOQUE VILLAGE
Looking for Material editting, which would violate FCC?

  36. 37 phineast

George-I watched a good portion of the debate on 612 as you recommended-but when you cam on for your 3 time my cable box fried…..what is up with that! It took the rest of the evening and a long time on the line with cablevision to figure it out. It must have been a really hot topic you were gonna discuss.
I must say that Jimmy looked pissed that he had to be there and he definalely had ants in his pants-he sat about as still as my 7 yr old nephew in a church pew. Maybe there was more to the mirror than meets the eye.

  37. 38 jezebel282

It is very interesting to watch these debates again.

There is certainly a lot of sneering by the candidates. Every once in a while, Harkins just can’t stand it anymore and says, “Are you kidding me!!!!????” I love that part.

One thing that struck me was Costello, Harkins and Mulligan always spoke about what they will do.

Miron only speaks of what he has “done”. But he speaks very quickly and the lies just come out like machine gun bullets. He is really good at that. No doubt.

It seems Miron has no plan for Stratford beyond Tuesday other than more of the same.

  38. 39 phineast

God help us all if they let the fools and criminals vote.

  39. 40 jezebel282

    Phin,

“God help us all if they let the fools and criminals vote.”

    Miron calls them “constituents”.

  40. 41 1george1

    Jeze,
    constituents and donators?

    Phin
Thanks for the props – I think.

  41. 42 1george1

    # 25: The lies started as soon as Miron opened his mouth.
It was amazing. I think Harkins and Costello were kind of
    shocked at the blatancy.

Not George though. George seemed to expect it and if
you actually listened to George, he made great sense. He might even get 35 votes this year.

  42. 43 1george1

    # 24 Weisel coverage:
Mulligan, continuing his theme of pounding away at
union pensions and the lack of economic development,
got the biggest laugh of the night when he was asked
how he would solve the pension shortfall. “Well, a
winning Powerball ticket might just cover it,” Mulligan said.

    # 26 I am still wondering why Jimmy’s police never put
the name of the person I told them I overheard a non
regular point out “slashed someone’s tire?”

I had Fire Capt Murray shake my hand at end of night.

Either $ 220 or $ 240, the fully funding percent
