Not Mayor Unless You Vote

Harkins vows to make Stratford proud

Written by Rep. John Harkins

Government. Politics. Elected official.

Too often, these are words or titles that are met with a great deal of disdain and mistrust by the public. Instead of being viewed as the building blocks of our democracy, the very institution of government, and the people who make it work, are reviled as self-serving and broken.

That has been true of Stratford in the last four years, and I’m running for Mayor to change that. I want to restore the public’s trust in Town Hall.

As mayor, one of my first acts to restore that trust will be to make changes to the ethics policies to which elected officials and political appointees are subject.

First, we must end the appearance that Stratford Town Hall is an employment agency for friends and family of elected officials. Stratford needs an even tougher nepotism prohibition, as well as tighter conflict of interest restrictions governing town hiring practices. This is particularly true when it comes to our public safety agencies.

Mayoral staff (i.e. “cabinet officials”) who are not subject to council approval must play by the same rules as the rest of the town’s civil service system. Unlike in the current administration, I will not award bonuses or raises to mayoral staff when wage freezes are being negotiated with unionized employees, even if those wage freezes have not yet taken effect. My administration will not tolerate what happened earlier this year — a last-minute rush to give mayoral cabinet members 6 to 10% raises prior to the enactment of a wage freeze with town unions.

Nothing is more important than transparency and openness in how taxpayer dollars are spent, and to that end I will work to clarify when an expenditure must be approved by the Town Council, and when it need not be. We have seen headline after headline in the last four years of the mayor spending money without council approval or consultation, and the Town Council claiming that their authority was circumvented. Enough is enough. I will consult frequently and openly with the council when it comes to matters of finance.

Finally, while it has been the crux of my efforts to reduce waste in town hall and keep property taxes in check, conducting a line by line audit of every town department, including the mayor’s office will help improve transparency in government. Timely compliance with the auditing committee’s requests for information will be mandatory for everyone including myself. Unfortunately, despite the Town Council’s creation of a similar body over his veto, the mayor has been less than forthcoming and painfully slow in cooperating the current Financial Advisory Committee. That is unacceptable, and it will change if I am elected.

I want Stratford to have a government that is great as the town we live in. As your mayor, I’ll have the courage to make the reforms necessary to our ethics laws to restore your trust in government because it is time to restore the pride in our town.

Whew! Just a small break. I’ll bet you were tired of reading Miron’s lies too.

It’s actually a pleasure to discuss something positive for a change.

    Let’s start with Harkins credentials:

Bachelor of Science Degree in Finance from the University of Tulsa in Oklahoma.
(Not the Close-Cover-Before- Striking School of Law)

7 consecutive term in the General Assembly and currently hold a leadership position.
(Not a one man ambulance chaser)

Harkins will work with the BOE to provide the best education to Stratford children.

Harkins will restore morale to the Police and Fire Departments.

Harkins will restructure the Town Attorney’s office.

    Harkins will oppose airport expansion

Harkins will negotiate a fair and reasonable deal regarding the Theater

Harkins will work with the Town Council.

    Harkins will oppose Avalon Bay

Harkins will work with the EPA and DEP to resolve Raymark waste

    Did I leave anything out?

    AMEN, AMEN, AMEN!

Each of us has a right to his/her own opinion and beliefs. There are definitely loyalists who will stand by Jim Miron and probably even follow him off a bridge should he ever decide to jump off one (oh, please, please, please). What I absolutelly cannot understand is how snowed these people are. Maybe it’s not that, maybe it’s that they OWE him for some “favor” and he’s calling in markers. I understand from many that that’s why lawn signs were placed – even on people’s properties who have absolutely no intention of voting for Miron.

I was told by a family member recently that they saw Miron, in his town-provided SUV, planting lawn signs! Not sure that’s proper use of a town-provided vehicle and yes, it was him doing the sign installation on a property with a “for sale” sign in front of it. The house was empty and it’s probably questionable that he had the property-owner’s permission!! So, right now, of course we, the taxpayers, are continuing to pay him a salary and he’s out campaigning in a vehicle we pay for and we provided for his use as mayor, not his use as a candidate. Abuse of the privilege? Maybe I’m nickel and diming the issue, but it’s just another example of what we can expect should he be re-elected for another four years.

I’d love to hear from readers about whether or not they’ll start getting ready to get out of “dodge” should the unlikely occur. I know it’s on my mind – I don’t want to hang around here for another four years of Mironville!

John Harkins is obviously a great husband, father, brother, son, friend and state representative. My goodness – look at all the support he has. We want Stratford to be a place that we families with children have no problem raising or educating our children, we want it to flourish economically so the tax burden on the residents is alleviated, we want it to be a community that is brought back to the greatness it once had – not one known for it’s political upheaval and fighting!

I urge everyone to reflect deeply on the last four years – and, before you go into your voting location, ask yourself one question – is Miron really good enough for the Town of Stratford, or do we deserve better. I’ve already answered this for myself and my family – we deserve better and my vote is with John Harkins for moving our Town forward and in a positive direction.

  3. 3 jezebel282

    PCS,

You forgot to mention that he is cuter than Miron too.

  4. 4 pcsperling

Oh, but that goes without saying! And, the #1 thing – HE’S IRISH!

    URGENT UPDATE…

    “And, the #1 thing – HE’S IRISH!”

As we embark upon a midterm election, our nation considers who will be granted the honor of leading us in the days ahead. The times in which we live demand that we choose wisely. The following are 10 qualities needed in our public leaders:

    1. Courage to make hard decisions.
    2. Character and a set of core values that merit trust.
    3. A clear vision for the future.
    4. The ability to call forth the best in others.
    5. Discipline.
    6. Recognition that he/she is accountable to the people.
    7. The ability to see things, not simply as they are but as they ought to be.
    8. The respect of his/her family.
    9. The flexibility to learn, improve and adjust.

A track record of placing the good of the people over personal ambition.
Our ability to vote came at a price. It is our duty to make certain that we are informed and that we take part in this vital civic responsibility. Nations rise and fall as to the caliber of their leaders. The quality of our leaders is dependent on us.

    Jez,

I wonder, does Rev. Bill Shuler knows John Harkins?
It looks like he is writing about John Harkins.

    Ron,

Was your post referring to me?

Your post states 10 points, but only enumerates 9?

    Jeze
You left out Harkins choice for Town Attorney and assistants!

    1 – Irish Kevin Kelly

    2 – Irish John O’Florek

    3 – Irish Richard O’Burturla

    PCS

While your praise of Mr. Harkins and damnattion of Mr. Miron
is consistent with your post of feelings about Jimmy.
I too have blasted Jimmy on political levels as well as certain
    followers / supporters.
I too have blasted John on political levels as well as certain
    followers / supporters,

But am I or am I not a good famlly man, despite not being a
    husband or father?
What about my aunts and uncles, cousins, neices and nephews,
    godsons and goddaughters?
What about my friends and organizations and people I helped
    in the past and present?

    What about Dom?

I have reasons to NOT back John and certainly not certain of
his backers, who even Jeze and you bash.

If Dom or John get voted Mayor, I have a realistic concern that’
their supporters will be worse then Mironuts.

I like and respect you, PCS.
I admire Jeze’s passion and responsiveness.
    Star is a sweet person.
There are or have been others.

I disagree with Mike R, but give him props as a family man and loving
father, and praise when he offers insight and thoughtful comments,
whether I agree or don’t agree,

    There are others.

RON – TURN ON THE “I” COUNTER

I am down, knowing that I am the best person for the job as Mayor,
and would have the most to overcome as Mayor or Councilor, since
politics has different priorities than public interest.

I do not disparage Mr. Harkins / Costello / Miron in their abilities,
intelligence, and character, except in a political venue.

    – I know how I can cut taxes
    – I know how to increase revenues and the tax base
    – I know how to address budget and transparency issue.
    – I have run volunteer organizations of hundreds. Paid are easier.

But I would not be kissing anyone’s butt, nor steering favortism.
And I would be the best advocate for an Independent and free
stratford, from the terrorists in the Federal, State, and Local
    governments and political organizations.

It will NEVER happen to have true DEMOCRACY and REPUBLIC in this
COCAINE REPUBLIC “OILS” SYSTEM of courtesan intellect whose
    Town-State-Federal Committees and Executive-Judicial-Executive
personify …. potter stewart’s definition of obsenity.

The USA needs a political enema, especially in Stratord. 😦

    George ~

My credit of John Harkins’ being a family man – great husband, father, son, brother, etc. is certainly not meant as any disrespect towards you or Dom. Unfortunately, it’s very difficult for someone who is not a “family” man/woman (married, with children) to understand what is and has been happening in Stratford with respect to our education system. The “dinks” and “sinks” don’t want to support or have their tax dollars support anything they don’t utilize, and the education system is one of them. Miron falls into the “sink” category and he’s pretty much proven he doesn’t support our education system.

  9. 9 ronmoreau

    George,

#10 is “A track record of placing the good of the people over personal ambition.”

Our Mayor lacks all these qualities.

You and John Harkins have all these qualities.

There should be 11. The one missing is Empathy.

This town needs a man like John Harkins at the helm.

The 3rd district need a man like you at the helm.

I wish you good luck Tuesday.

  10. 10 1george1

    Ron
    Thank you for the props.

May Tuesday bring what is best for you and whatever you truly want
    related to your election.
    Win or lose, you win.

The same is true about myself. With the best of my ability, I was able to
make the general public aware of who, what, when, where, why, & how.

More importantly, I helped people like yourself understand a few of the
different pieces of the puzzle and reflect on things they NEVER took into
    consideration.

    Such as?

In the 1990s, stocks were going straight up with 15 % ROI.
    People got greedy.
Nobody adjusted or expected the reality.
Everyone knows the stock market will come back.
However NO ONE know when, and how many DIPS and for how long!

    Such as?

The Public Treasury is not inexhaustible.

    Such as?

The selfish games of Attorneys and Town Committee people who are
like vampires and ghouls, who care nothing about other people.

    Such as?

What Stratford has, could have, and has lost to never be regained
and some that can be regained or improved.

  11. 11 1george1

    PCS,

I am very articulate when it comes to speaking and writing compared
    to most people.
I am also cryptic when I want to be and unfocused when frustrated
at knowing various things are related, but difficult to articulate the
connections in a universally, preponderant, clear, plain, and evident
manner. Especially true to those who could NEVER accept my cedibility
because their life history and experiences are different than mine.

None of the senior citizens wants to deny education needs to your
children. We object to waste, theft, and selfish priorities that many
in the government take as a right rather than a priviledge.

Jim Miron has been 100 % correct about the great pay, benefits, and
pension abuse, in the last month or two.

He is better positioned to understand and see the things I see in the
past, present, and future than ANY OF YOU!

Jim Miron and Dick Miron, and Rich Burturla caused many of these
problems along with their Republican counterparts, which he wants
to avoid acknowledging, in order to get re-elected.

Jim Miron’s people are right about some of the Republicans.
Many of the Republicans are right about the Mironuts.

There are people in both parties and independents who have known
it for years or have started to recognize the reality.

I have also been successful in getting people in both parties to know
there is a vertical govenmental organization AFFECTING Stratford for
the past 50 years, and worse the last 30 years.

Miron is smart to ignore DOM + I.

Miron knows Harkins has more money and is a bigger threat to his
machine and perhaps to the Town, than Dom or I.
Harkins is a disposeable front for those behind the scenes and I have
    zero animosity vs. John.

However at the end of the WICC debate, there was a very interesting
(poker) tell, when I mentioned my secret plan had yet to take place
to allow me to become Mayor.
Jim, Dom, & John asked WHAT was the SECRET PLAN?

My reply, was that just before the election, “ALL 3 of THEM WOULD BE
    INDICTED.”
    Jim & Dom laughed.
John’s head and eyes dropped slightly as he understood what I said.

I have given all candidates and people like Tom Moore & Gavin certain
information the PRESS and ENFORCEMENT are known to have.

I have trying to protect the innocent and the entrapped …

    However …
    TICK … TICK …. TICK ……TICK …….TICK …. TICK .. TICK 😦 BOOM!

    A few final thoughts….

John Harkins is an honest, responsible and competent candidate. He has the financial and educational experience to guide Stratford through the current fiscal crisis and will put all of his energies into making sure Stratford emerges intact and prepared. Mr. Harkins is clearly the obvious choice for Stratford’s future and perhaps repairing its past.

Anyone who has paid any attention to what has happened in Stratford for the last four years (or made their mortgage payments) knows without a doubt that Miron was and is not fit for any position of authority. These pages are filled with his lies, incompetence, vengeance, greed and corruption.

Dom Costello has just received the biggest endorsement of his life from the CT Post. Unfortunately, the CT Post is probably selecting what it thinks is the best candidate for Bridgeport. Just as they have sided in every instance with Airport expansion at our expense, they are now siding with Costello. Once again, owning a doughnut shop does not make you a “businessman”, it makes you a merchant. Town government is not a business. There are things you can do in a business that are perfectly legal but would get you arrested if you were in government. Last I had heard, the clerks in Dom’s shop were not unionized and all (ok…most) of his customers could read and write. Domenic Costello is in favor of Domenic Costello. Once that is understood, it becomes clear why Mr. Costello only speaks out during a mayoral election cycle.

And then there is George Mulligan. If you feel particularly driven to vote independent forget about voting for Costello (he’s only independent because the Republicans wouldn’t have him). Vote for George Mulligan instead. No matter what you say about Mulligan, two things remain absolutely clear. Mr. Mulligan really does care about Stratford and he is a true independent.

  13. 13 jezebel282

Now George, don’t going screwing up this endorsement by posting a thousand words on Nixon or something.

  14. 14 phineast

    Hear, hear!

  15. 15 mikereynolds

The only way Harkins loses is if stupid people believe all of Miron’s lies and last minute moves to make himself look good. The problem is is that there are a lot of dumb voters out there. Makes me nervous.

  16. 16 1george1

I wonder if these suggestions are appropriate for changing stratford?

    Cussing at Work

    Dear Employees:

It has been brought to management’s attention that some individuals
throughout the company have been using foul language during the
course of normal conversation with their co-workers.

Due to complaints received from some employees who may be easily
offended, this type of language will no longer be tolerated.

We do, however, realize the critical importance of being able to
accurately express your feelings when communicating with co-workers.

Therefore,a list of 18 New and Innovative ‘TRY SAYING’ phrases have
