Hires, Liars and Fires

From left to right: Hire, Liar and Fire

A couple of the upcoming expenses Ex-Mayor Miron and Fire Chief Cavanaugh have left us are two complaints that have been filed with the Connecticut Human Rights & Opportunities Commission (CHRO). Right after Miron forced Fire Chief Jay Cybart into retirement he had Fire Chief Cavanaugh “search” for a new Deputy Fire Chief ($85,000/year). What were the requirements? Apparently not many. The single most important requirement seems to have been to shore up what Miron thought would be a good demographic for him.

What follows is a trail of lies, broken agreements, discrimination and above all a blatant disregard for our safety.

Murray Complaint

Kepchar Complaint

If you had read the documents carefully, one of the items you will have found is paragraph 12 of Assistant Chief Kepchar’s complaint where he alleges Miron authorized the payment of $50,000 in moving expenses to bring Curtis Maffett from Columbia SC to Connecticut. Incredible.

Even worse is the plain and simple fact that within the department already there was an extremely qualified, dedicated candidate who had applied for this position. The candidate lived in Stratford, had been a member of the SFD for 27 years, was highly educated and trained, had an intimate working knowledge of the Town and its physical plant and was even selected as Firefighter of the Year (Firefighter of the Year). This candidate’s problem? Being female.

Obviously Cavanaugh, Buturla and Best are not problems that will simply go away.

What is worse is that they are not just costing us money. They are all effecting the lives and property of Stratford residents.

We clearly deserve better. Don’t you think, Mayor Harkins?

  2. 2 mayor2013

    Jez,

This management of the Town of Stratford Fire department has become pointless. The leader and deputy leader need to be removed immediately. $50,000 for moving expenses – I just gasped at that one. And, I want to see this Deputy’s resume as well – how can they deny it to Ellen?

    MEMO
    TO: Mayor Harkins

I trust your HR Director is diligently working on this issue??????????

Or, shall I stop trusting you as well?

  3. 3 jezebel282

    2013,

“And, I want to see this Deputy’s resume as well”

The Town of Stratford hired two consulting firms, Randi Frank Consulting, LLC out of Wallingford, Connecticut and Slavin Management Consultants out of Norcross, Georgia to help in the nationwide search for a Deputy Fire Chief. Advertisements for the position were made in various media outlets.
Maffett began his service with what was then Columbia’s Fire Services in 1972. He was promoted to Captain in 1987, Battalion Chief in 1994 and Assistant Chief in 1997. The Fire Services changed its name to the Columbia Fire and Rescue in the early 1990s. Maffet retired in June 2006 as Assistant Chief of Human Resources for Fire and Rescue.
The New Deputy Fire Chef has received a special diploma from the Fire Executive Development Institute at Dillard University along with certifications from The United States Department of Homeland Security; Black Chief Officers Committee; Rockhurst University; The National Fire Academy; South Carolina Fire Academy and the Carl Holmes Executive Development Institute.

Apparently, none of that includes graduating from an accredited college.

“how can they deny it to Ellen?”

This is not the first instance of discrimination against women by Miron. Usually he just fires them and hires younger replacements.

  4. 5 1george1

    Mayor 2013,

All resumes of public employees are available under FOI.

It cost 50 cents a page.

Contact information and certain other information can be redacted
    under FOI.

    You can contact HR.
HR may need Town Attorney permission.
You FOI request can not be denied.
It can be reasonably delayed and reasonably redacted.

It is a shame that they went outside of the departments-the most cost effective thing to do for the time being seems to me is to eliminate the position altogether as a budgetary cost saving measure. That is a cost savings of over $200k when you add in the bene’s. Not a small chunk of change. It also seems that if the FD deputy is kept that is the person who should be running EMS. It makes the most sense. It would still realize a cost savings overall too with consolidation. The idea has merit.

If these 2 win their CHRO cases the citizens need to form a coalition and go after Miron in civil court-though in my opinion what he did is criminal.

Ellen could manage the EMS/FD very efficiently and very effectively without all the controversy.

  6. 7 phineast

should have said positions not position-I was referring to FD and PD

  7. 8 jezebel282

    Phin,

“Ellen could manage the EMS/FD very efficiently and very effectively without all the controversy.”

Ms. Murray could manage whatever she wanted to. But that is a GREAT idea.

By the way, those are only two of a slew of CHRO complaints against Miron.

  8. 9 jezebel282

    Phin,

“eliminate the positions altogether as a budgetary cost saving measure. That is a cost savings of over $200k when you add in the bene’s. Not a small chunk of change.”

As a reminder, both occupants of these position are already collecting pensions from Waterbury and Columbia SC. Any bets on whether they will even want the job in four years after they are vested in our pension fund?

Also collecting pensions while collecting paychecks from us are Cavanaugh and McCarthy. Also from Waterbury.

  9. 10 1george1

QSCEND the Stratford e-mail system is based in Waterbury,
    home of ex-Mayor Giordano,
    CT.’s most depraved ex-Mayor.

2 Interesting definitions related to Googling “James Miron,”
    “Urban Dictionary”

  10. 11 phineast

Jez-if the positions are budgetarily eliminated now they won’t be vested..

  11. 12 phineast

    George- that definition suits him

  12. 13 1george1

To my memory, no USA ex-mayor comes close to Giardano
    for being sick and depraved.

As far as Jim Miron goes ….
I wonder how many decisions were made by the Party?
    1 – R Burturla
    2 – Haddad
    3 – McCauley
    4 – J Burturla
    5 – LoSchiavo

And how many were made by Jim?
    1 – Heather
    2 – Kent
    3 – Christian
    4 – Branyan

When Kevin Kelly was made Town Attorney, the same Town
Council gave Dick Miron $ 26,000 a year with Benefit for 20
hour work week, which DeCilio complained about loudly/often.

Yet none of the people who later got the ax …. said anything.

Same stuff continually goes on in government, throughout Miron
and now into Harkins. It will go into the next one too.

YO PCS, any comments about the smaller RR Parking Garage,
new zoning changes and the bigger tax bill?

The same people giving direction to Harkins are giving it to the
CT POST, who Saturday will have separate stories on Debra
    Gilbert Taylor and Michael DeJoseph.
Mere co-incidence they were both Ethics Commissioner under
the Republican Town Council / Dicks Miron – Burturla.
It tells me my Letter to the Editor in the STRATFORD STAR was
DEVASTATING to the adversarial COVER STORIES.

For people who do not know what is going on, I am a difficult
read, because I overload information in letters to the editor
    while sacrificing readability.
However, for people like in this blog and in the political parties,
it is like turning on a light and watching cockroaches scatter.

The peope at national made a point, recently.
And reprisals can not be prevented.

  13. 14 jezebel282

    George,

    “I am a difficult
read, because I overload information in letters to the editor
    while sacrificing readability.
However, for people like in this blog and in the political parties,
it is like turning on a light and watching cockroaches scatter.”

The comments I get from bloggers and readers is that you are a difficult read here too and most people just scroll over your lengthy disjointed posts.

    Sorry.

  14. 15 jezebel282

    Phin,

“Jez-if the positions are budgetarily eliminated now they won’t be vested”

    Really? Gee…who knew?
    😉

  15. 16 rex525

It also seems to me that if both of the Deputy Chief (FD & PD) positions were budgetarily eliminated at this time it would go along way to reduce the financial exposure to the Town from these two new potential lawsuits. But, I guess if that was done it would also reduce the billable hours that the town’s lawyers could charge us taxpayers, so I don’t see that happening. The only word I can think of to describe this latest Miron inspired fiasco is REVOLTING!

$50,000.00 moving expenses for an incompetant who reportedly spends most of his time napping, REVOLTING, just REVOLTING!

Buturla, Cavanaugh, Maffett and Ridenhauer must go, AND GO VERY QUICKLY. Every taxpayer should escrow their tax payments and not give one thin dime to this town until these four bureaucrats are no longer on the payroll. It makes my stomach turn to think these four are being paid with my tax dollars while McNeal and Soto are still out of work with no means of support for their families. RESTORE THE PRIDE? REVOLTING!

  16. 17 jezebel282

    Rex,

“Buturla, Cavanaugh, Maffett and Ridenhauer must go, AND GO VERY QUICKLY. ”

    I couldn’t agree more.

The first two have damaged everything they’ve touched. Why do we need to wait for more persecutions, lies and incompetence? The last two are just killing time until they are vested in our pension plan.

Apparently the mayor couldn’t care less. Not quite what we expected when we voted for him, huh?

  17. 18 1george1

OK – I admit I am difficult to read.

Yet – I do get props for often uncovering jewels and points.

At least I am trying to help.

We do not have to agree on everything or anything or in between.
As long as it is good faith effort to try to help.

Example: Chris C. and I or Matt C. and I have parallel interests related to
    Shakespeare Theater.
I suspect Chris C’s vision & Matt C’s vision are closer than my preferred venue.
We agree the Hanney contract was horrible.
I believe it was never intended to be realistic,
Yet, like the Town Charter, Elections, Bid/Change Orders, and Pensions,
among others, Chris was correct that once could never tell for sure that
    it would not be enacted..

  18. 19 jezebel282

    Update:

Lest anyone doubt the discriminatory practices of Ex Mayor Miron and James Cavanaugh, let me cite a few numbers:

There are about 26,435 fire fighters in Connecticut. Of those there are 62 women on 29 departments in CT. ( http://www.ct.gov/cfpc/cwp/view.asp?a=2529&Q=315532&cfpcPNavCtr=| )

    62. That is 0.02% or roughly 425 male firefighters for each female firefighter.

We have a total of: 4.

Among these four female firefighters, one has served Stratford for 27 years, she has been promoted through the ranks to become Assistant Fire Chief, has earned her Bachelors Degree (with teaching certification), is soon to receive her Master’s degree, has successfully completed innumerable Fire Safety courses and Certification programs, has volunteered countless hours of service to the community, and all the while being loving and caring mother.

So….once again we ask: what would possibly prevent her from being promoted to Deputy Fire Chief? Or for that matter, Fire Chief?

    Does anyone want to guess?

  19. 20 rex525

Perhaps it is the possibility that after 27 years here, her allegiance would be with protecting the citizens of Stratford as well as her colleagues at the fire department and NOT to the politician who occupied the Mayors office. Let us not forget that Jim Miron was the ultimate control freak and considered his own shallow needs first and foremost, not the greater good of Stratford.

It remains to be seen how the current occupant of the Mayor’s office handles this situation. Let us not forget that there are still two policemen out of work without pay after our new Mayor has been in office for four months. Restore the Pride?

  20. 21 jezebel282

    Rex,

“It remains to be seen how the current occupant of the Mayor’s office handles this situation.”

The situation is looking bleaker by the day. Apparently Harkins is only willing to ask the PD union for wage concessions and do nothing in return for them. He will continue to permit Buturla to wield power, play favorites and destroy morale.

He seems content to let Cavanaugh lie about anything and everything.

He doesn’t seem to mind that many volunteer EMS personnel just don’t want to put up with it anymore.

And how many women has he interviewed for anything yet?

  21. 22 rex525

Jez- “And how many women has he interviewed for anything yet?”

Unfortunately we know that one of them was Sue Collier, thanks Jez

  22. 23 jezebel282

    Rex,

“Unfortunately we know that one of them was Sue Collier, thanks Jez”

I didn’t say, “Hire the first one that walks by your door.”

    Geeze.

  23. 24 1george1

    Restore the Pride?

This town is sounding and looking like the Oakland Raiders.

    Hey PCS,

Harkins let John Burturla stay, keeping out McNeil, Soto, Farmer,
where there is a grievance but NO ARREST.

Harkins let John Burturla stay, who kept one LoSchiavo as D/C
    hired another, who A D M I T T E D he committed F E L O N I E S

Harkins let John Burturla stay, who is in position to help Christian
Miron get a nice settlement for Dick to pay off …

Harkins let Rich Burturla stay, and keep most of the legal cases and
    rack up dough.

Harkins let Sue Collier stay, make up budget numbers, and hold back
    actuary report from being provided.

Harkins let several Miron appointees stay.

My letter to the editor to the Star unmasked the phoney acts …..
and we had DeCilio + Marcone in a story about $ 30,000 a year salary
for 22 1/2 hour work week, with no mention af estimated $ 30,000 a
year in Health and other benefits.

I guess Kevin Kelly may back Burturla’s opinion about no first amendment
    rights in Stratford?

“New faces bring diversity to Stratford Town Hall
    Richard Weizel, STAFF WRITER
    Published: 11:49 p.m., Sunday, April 25, 2010

STRATFORD — Change comes slowly, even by the stubborn standards of New England, to this seaside town of 50,000 that borders the state’s largest city and has its own share of big-city issues.

So the suddenly changing face — or faces — of Town Hall, with its broader cultural diversity is gaining plenty of attention.

It started last year with the town’s two first blacks appointed to the posts of deputy police and fire chief by then-Mayor James R. Miron. Deputy Police Chief Patrick Ridenhour and Deputy Fire Chief Curtis Maffett, in fact, are still on the job in the new Republican administration of Mayor John A. Harkins…

…Add to the mix new Finance Director Susan Collier, a Democratic”

OK, look, the point of diversity is to select the person with the best qualifications regardless of race, sex, religion etc. It is not to pick any person just because they lay claim to some sort of racial or ethnic background. And since when did being a “Democrat” become a minority group?

And just to be clear, Geen Thazhampallath and Ronald Ing may be the best CAO and HR Director we’ve ever had. Time will tell, but at least they were qualified.

However, Maffett, Ridenhour and Collier happen to be the least qualified of any of the candidates for their positions. That is just wrong.

  25. 26 cstratct

I have to take issue with your statement Jezebel. The point of diversity is not to “select the person with the best qualifications regardless of race, sex, religion, etc.” The point of affirmative action, the EEOC and diversity hiring programs is to make sure that qualified indviduals who are considered part of a minority group are given equal opportunity for employment. We know that has not always been how hiring situations have played out in the past.

Are there problems with these programs? Sure, no program is without it inconsistencies.

Not to mention it’s a stretch to read what was written about Susan Collier to mean the writer was identifying Democrats as a minority group.

I find that Weizel often has a hard time getting the facts straight even when he’s given the information in black and white, but I certainly didn’t read his description of Susan Collier to mean he was referring to Democrats as a minority group.

  26. 27 rex525

“Maffett, Ridenhour and Collier happen to be the least qualified of any of the candidates for their positions. That is just wrong”

I’d trade all three to get Lt. Orlando Soto back to work. A qualified, dedicated public servant who actually WORKED HIS WAY UP to that position here in Stratford! Restore the pride???

  27. 28 jezebel282

    Cstrat,

“I have to take issue with your statement Jezebel.”

And I’ll take issue with yours.

The title of the article was “diversity” not “affirmative action”. Two quite different things. I know of no affirmative action or diversity hiring programs in Stratford.

  28. 29 rex525

Geeze, I had thought there was a program in place to hire the “morally challenged”.

  29. 30 jezebel282

    Rex,

“I had thought there was a program in place to hire the “morally challenged”.”

There is. It is working wonderfully, don’t you think?

  30. 31 cstratct

Well then Jezebel why are you highlighting the affirmative action tenets in your condemnation of the article and those you single out?

Affirmative action policies are what bring diversity to a workplace. Why do you think EEO appears at the bottom of every job description? Of course these programs are in place in every municipality since they’re federally mandated.

The “point” of whatever it is you want to call it is that all qualified applicants are considered for a position. The “point” regarding diversity is that the workforce reflects the demographic characteristics of the community.

You may not believe these people are qualified, but obviously others disagree. If you’re so concerned about the choices being made perhaps you should run for office yourself. You obviously have a lot of strong opinions about the individuals you single out for ridicule.

  31. 32 jezebel282

    Cstrat,

“If you’re so concerned about the choices being made perhaps you should run for office yourself. You obviously have a lot of strong opinions about the individuals you single out for ridicule.”

Really? Do you think an avatar has a chance?

  32. 33 cstratct

Mildly amusing Jezebel, but the fact remains that since you have such strong opinions on the qualifications of the individuals you choose to single out here on this blog, you (the individual, not the avatar) should put yourself out there as well. I say the same to Mayor2013. George, Ron, Matt, Gavin, Adam and a few others post here without resorting to fake names and/or avatars. I don’t like the budgets (Town and BOE), and there are some issues on which I disagree with the present administration. But I’ll say what I’ve said since last November on this site, I’m willing to reserve judgment for now. It’s only been about 5 months and (at least for me) there is not enough of a track record to pass judgment.

  33. 34 jezebel282

    Cstrat,

“Mildly amusing Jezebel, but the fact remains that since you have such strong opinions on the qualifications of the individuals you choose to single out here on this blog, you (the individual, not the avatar) should put yourself out there as well.”

I didn’t see your name on the ballot either. But that’s neither here nor there. I’m not getting into this trading of shots. It makes neither your opinion nor my opinion more or less valid. We both know that neither one of us would stand a chance of obtaining the support of a corrupt Democratic Town Committee.

5 months is plenty of time to correct some of the gross actions of Miron and the mironistas. I have to agree with Rex on this. Harkins is rapidly (incredibly rapidly actually) losing good will and public support.

As for qualifications…it is not rocket science. For some reason we paid this person $50,000 to move from Columbia SC and his qualifications are far below that of at least two local candidates.

  34. 35 mayor2013

So many of you speak as if Mayor Harkins was the new guy on the block. John was a councilman (although not for very long), a long time member of the Republican Town Committee and a senior State Representative. He knows what has been going on in Stratford. He is not new to all of this stuff. He should have been ready to hit the ground running. And, he should have been able to steer us in the right direction. You all cuddle him like he is so naive to what has been going on. That is all poppycock – plain and simple. He is just not the person we all thought we voted for. He is disappointing and as I said previously, he should consider stepping down. Waiting 4 years for his term to end is just way too long even though he is not seeking a second term.

  35. 36 phineast

Chris- you are confusing the intention of affirmative action with the reality of it. The reality of affirmative action is that minority candidates are given freebies in the field of competition called extra points, curved scores and bonus points for being a minority-Harkins hired 2 qualified candidates in the positions of HR and CAO-I am still researching Collier’s qualifications-personally I do not think she has the personality or the capability for being a director. If she doesn’t give the council a copy of the actuary report in this weeks pony, then I know for sure she DOES NOT deserve the position-she is just another one of the liar hires of Miron and incapable of honesty. Council has asked for the report-by charter she has to turn it over to them. Here is a thought—with-hold her paychecks until she does her job and give council the report.
With regard to affirmative action-if you are qualified for the job and are the best candidate in the pool your race shouldn’t matter. The management demographic should reflect the community-so if we have a 90% “minority” community the hires should reflect that, if we don’t it should reflect what we have.
A note to Mayor Harkins- you promised to lift the roof and let the sun in for transparency and to disinfect the town hall-so far you have lifted a shingle or two. I know and understand that it is not easy-but please for the love of God-show us that you really meant what you said. I understand you don’t want negative headlines-believe me I do-but we need to finish the disinfection process and go after the people that have raped the town/taxpayers to set an example that it will never be acceptable or tolerated. You can’t just let them get away with it. Let’s get’er done once and for all then we really can move forward in a positive way–don’t drag it out-who ever falls, falls. If they were honest they have nothing to worry about. We will be standing beside you helping with solutions but we can’t until we feel we can trust the people in charge-you know what needs to be done post haste-work on the short list as an act of good faith and people will be forever grateful and ready to roll up their sleeves and help. Remember we are setting the example of acceptable behavior and standards not only for the people that work in town but for all the students that live here. I don’t know about you, but if someone misappropriated money from my savings account I’d be going after them to not only get the money back but to make sure they can’t victimize anyone else. That is what we are asking-to do what is right.

  36. 37 1george1

    Chris,

I admire you for being willing to take on the crew and for your optimism
about certain things and pessimism on others.

As people, I like John, Sue, and others.
However they held back the Milliman report until all of the Budget Workshps
were done and with 1 week to go before the Stratford HS Public Hearing.

I know the calculations for Milliman were done in or before January.
Even Phin has reached a tipping point on the Actuary Report.

At this point, I have become so distrustful, I am wondering IF there willl be
a REVISED ACTUARY REPORT, AFTER JULY 1…. ?

I can believe Harkins had no advance knowledge of why certain people
wanted him to delay meeting me and settle on March 18.

I can believe Harkins and Sue taking instructions from …..

I talk to dozens of people weekly, who know dozens of people whp
know what goes on locally and don’t like it, even if they benefit.

Most people in town know pieces of the puzzle.

Ron Moreau thanked me a couple years ago, when I posted some info,
which he knew was true, but could never fit into the puzzle.
There were many others including Sylvia, who was starting to come around
and while she was loyal to some people who I do not believe deserved her
trust, she was also street smart in many political ways, and too trusting in
    others.

Much of politics is who sis getting what from the Public Pie.
In some cases there really are no good guys.
In many cases they are plenty of good guys with honest differences in
    their political priorities.

I was in the pension meeting late.
    I read body language.
As expected, I got a very reserved silent reception.
The FIRE DEPT rep was very TICKED as he should be.
However, it is NOT about singling them out or others.
It is about proving objective, clear, plain and evident examples,
    locally, nationally, and internationally to show E V E R Y O N E
    was S U C K E R E D !!

I unlocked the back door and side entrances for many people.
Including many who do not deserve it.

    Why would I do that.

Why strike at the puppets and pawns when it is others moving people?

  37. 38 jezebel282

    Phin,

“We will be standing beside you helping with solutions but we can’t until we feel we can trust the people in charge”

I agree. We have learned the hard way over the years that it is not what politicians say (Sorry, Mr. Bauer) it is what they do. Miron twisted it every way he could, but at the end, a lot of money was missing, our taxes went up and nothing had changed (except for 50+ honest people who lost their jobs). If the clock is ticking loudly for Harkins it is because Miron set it to go off. Harkins can’t keep hitting the snooze button.

Oh…and then there’s this from last week:

“just wait until next week to see. When this hits the fan the taxpayers are going to be demanding a grand jury investigation.

    Jez- I promise. ;)”

  38. 39 1george1

I do not believe any grand jury would go after the real problem causers.

March 18 break into my home to delete hundreds of records was all
related to Mossman Trial and various FBI / U. S. ATTORNEYS and other
State / Town attorneys and Fed / State judged.

April 20 front page of CT. POST had 3 of those Republican former
    U. S. Attorneys backing the Federal Judge who handled my case.
An ex-local U. S. Attorney Droney was in next chamber.
They were all protecting FBI, of last 20 years, who I believe had’local
relationships along line of “Whitey Bolger.”

Could there be a grand jury / arrest conviction?
    Yup.
Likely a fall guy / scapegoat ….. like Natera.
Natera likely an FBI plant and would appear to be jailed, but who
    would know?

Supposedly the guy (who murdered a life time friend) was murdered
in jail. My friend was working undercover with Fairfield Police on a
thing analogous to the Russian Brothel.

What was in the computer was valuable to FBI / JUSTICE – LOCAL
    KNOWN ASSOCIATES.

By manipulating Harkins to meet me on the 49 th anniversary of
my mother’s death and then the specifics of what was deleted
was far more valuable to me, to triangulate perps puppets.

Thier M.O. included initial Mossman court date on 22nd anniversary of
    my father’s death …. and

Causing Trial before and then Court Clerk verdict on 7th anniversary
of my godfather / uncle’s death (he was born Columbus Day) and

My maternal uncle died on Columbus day in 1986.
The year before I went to his daughter’s wedding and USPS made me
file a grievance to be able to get the time off.

This is about a need to inflict terrorism and psychic gratification that
a coward would need to feel, by murdering innocent people in a way
that can not be proven murder and leaving bolder and bolder clues, it
tells me a lot about my antagonists and thier support system.

The bolder they got, the more they believe they are protected and
the more they believe they have total local control.

They are also multi-generational in their deeds over protacted time.

What they have done to me and people I care about, they have done
to many others on a much larger scale and want me to know about it.

Reminds me of a former co-worker who loved to talk about love em
and leave em, because it was “no fun” if he couldn’t tell anyone.
    – before working with me, he was a pimp for strippers.
    – despite the nice looking call girls, bedding hurrs, is
no accomplishment, even if they are hot. Coke has same affect.
    – He got married – divorced – essentially his dick fell off.
Since that was all that he had ….. He made his own hell.

    – My antagonists ….. Whatever terrorism they inflict on others,
it is a mark of massive inferiority complex – not superiority!

    They always assassinate the assassins.
They always assassinate the assassins’ assassins.
They betrayers have their own private hell …..

    Phin,

Let’s be clear about this, I KNOW the difference between the intention and reality of Affirmative Action. But let’s also be honest in assessing the hiring practices of both the public and private sectors and admit that there are abuses on both sides of the fence. Affirmative Action policies are doing far more good then harm.

As for your comment, “-if you are qualified for the job and are the best candidate in the pool your race shouldn’t matter,” you are correct. And that’s just what Affirmative Action policies are designed to do.

With regard to the actuary report, what if she is told to withhold the actuary report? Some of the posters here say they elected Mayor Harkins to “clean up.” He obviously believes he is doing what is best for the town, including his hiring decisions. He obviously has more direct communication with these individuals and is more knowledgeable about their backgrounds then many of the posters here. Just because Mayor Harkins doesn’t do what everything you or others on here want him to do doesn’t mean he has failed or isn’t upholding his responsibilities. As I said I’ll reserve judgment for now.

  40. 41 jezebel282

    Phin, Cstrat,

“Affirmative Action policies are doing far more good then harm.”

The argument is irrelevant. The Town of Stratford doesn’t have an affirmative action or outreach program.

“With regard to the actuary report, what if she is told to withhold the actuary report?”

If there are statutory requirements for producing the report, then whoever told her not to release it is very liable.

“He obviously has more direct communication with these individuals and is more knowledgeable about their backgrounds then many of the posters here.”

That seems to be the problem. As yet, there is no real explanation for the continued suspension without pay of Captain McNeil or Lt Soto. There are many, many people still scratching their heads about appointing Susan Collier as CFO after 4 months of Harkins Administration complaining about the Town books. Morale is still low at the PD. Harkins can’t even get Cavanaugh to apologize for lying to the public.

“As I said I’ll reserve judgment for now.”

Government is not a secret organization (Don’t start, George!). There is nothing that taxpayers and voters could not understand if presented with the data.

We, ok, most of us, are all grownups and we CAN handle the truth.

  41. 42 cstratct

Yes, Jezebel, the argument is appropriate because the town has to adhere to federal law. Whatever you want to call it, the town must adhere to laws that fight discriminatory hiring practices. The Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Americans with Disabilities Act. etc. By adhering to federal and state laws is the town is adhering to a “program.”

And what is it (besides the actuary report) that you think Mayor Harkins is not telling the residents? Here’s a thought: Maybe Mayor Harkins is satisfied with the work Ms. Collier is producing since taking over the position. You appear to be basing your opinion of Ms. Collier on the person who hired her. Do you have first-hand knowledge of her day-to-day work product?

My political leanings are clear, and I’m certainly not looking to defend any administration or official. But these incessant personal attacks are futile and appear vindictive. Especially when those making the attacks refuse to take public ownership. And yes, I’m beating that drum again because I believe it is appropriate.

  42. 43 1george1

    Chris,
I have asked every couple weeks for 6 months for the Milliman Actuary Report.
They could not accurately inform the Town on the Pension Shortfall Deposit
in January, which was made in January …. without knowing almost all facts and
circumstances to create professional actuarial projection that they would not
lose their certification, if found to be false or misleading.

At worst that actuary report should have been avaailable in February.

I believe it could have been available in November,

And Chris, I have always been a supporter of Sue, and gave Harkins the benefit of
    the doubt.

I am not asking Harkins to undo all problems created by Miron / past Town
    Councils and managments.

    However

    personnel is policy

certain decision stand or fall on their own merrit!

Oh Jeze – Question if I post comment on this here or new spot?

Government is not a “secret” organization (Don’t start, George!). 😉

Actually many of the government actors appear to “secrete” a slime….

Anybody know the answer to the riddle on the police cars?

  43. 44 jezebel282

    CStrat,

“the argument is appropriate because the town has to adhere to federal law.”

Actually it was you that brought up affirmative action of which we have none.

“By adhering to federal and state laws is the town is adhering to a “program.””

Violations of the law are not a program. Are we all on the law abiding citizen program?

“And what is it (besides the actuary report) that you think Mayor Harkins is not telling the residents?”

The actual costs of goods and services for the past year.

“Do you have first-hand knowledge of her day-to-day work product?”

She has neither the education nor the experience (other than ad hoc) to meet the qualifications of the job posted.

“And yes, I’m beating that drum again because I believe it is appropriate.”

You are entitled to beat it all you want.

  44. 45 rex525

    Rex,

“I had thought there was a program in place to hire the “morally challenged”.

    Jez,
“There is. It is working wonderfully, don’t you think?”

Yes Jez, it seems to be working far better than we the electorate had voted for last November.

Now in a shallow attempt to get this threadback on topic, how much does anyone think this little beauty involving Maffett is going to cost US as taxpayers again. Does anyone know if the Harkins administration has entered into dialogue with either of the effected parties to try to rectify this blunder (before we taxpayers AGAIN have to pay through the nose) or is the plan to throw wheelbarrels of cash at the Town Atty. and crew as usual. I’m sure that Adam Bower will not be commenting as it would violate one of his “rules” but I’m sure there is an elected official or two who moniter this site that SHOULD be “in the know”. How about a little “transparency” here, seeing that the pride restoration we were promised is apparently on hold.

  45. 46 cstratct

Jezebel, you “began” the dialogue on this issue when you posted this:

“OK, look, the point of diversity is to select the person with the best qualifications regardless of race, sex, religion etc. It is not to pick any person just because they lay claim to some sort of racial or ethnic background. And since when did being a “Democrat” become a minority group?”

First, diversity is not directly related to qualifications. A diverse workforce includes individuals of varied races, religions, etc. The POINT of diversity is to ensure that the workforce represents the community. The POINT of affirmative action is to increase diversity in the workforce. The laws were designed to ensure that qualified women, minorities and other historically under-represented groups were given equal opportunity for employment. An employer doesn’t practice diversity. Diversity is the outgrowth of affirmative action and “equal opportunity employers.”

  46. 47 jezebel282

    Cstrat,

The entire point was that we had a highly educated, highly trained, decorated firefighter right here within our department that was a minority (62 in the whole state) member that could have been selected. And now, rightly so, she has filed a complaint with the Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities. In such a male dominated field did we really have to reach out to someone already retired and living in another state and pay an extra $50,000? That is not “diversity”. That is not affirmative action. That is wrong.

  47. 48 phineast

CT- Glad to know you know the difference between the intention and the reality of affirmative action laws……Interesting you bring this up because LL violated those exact federal laws 17 times when she pushed her son to the top of the hiring pool. That is the reality and it was LL’s intention as well. So the question is in this circumstance what can we do about it to regain some of what was lost? That is one of the things on the short list-to restor the integrity to the HR dept.-Mr. Ing is a good start but finish up the job.
The issue in the FD is another complexity-and it is one that Ms. Murray is going to win-as her particular minority is far more under represented than the expensive Carolina import. Some interesting discussion has surfaced recently about how to remedy that problem and some interesting solutions that appear to be completely legal are being talked about by some taxpayers. One is actually a cost saving measure that changes the responsibility of the FD DC to be properly certified to be the EMS supervisor as well as a FD supervisor.(Murray can do that right?) It has some real interesting effects-like saving a salary of over $90k plus about $30k in bene’s a year while consolidating management in the FD which has way too many chiefs for the amount of worker bees and the EMS issue of an accessible and properly certified first responder being in charge of those who need to respond first-kapeesh? Saves wear and tear on the FD vehicles by being able to dispatch an ambulance instead of a ladder truck, it also gives the volunteers 24/7/365 access to scheduling via in house or via the internet and dispatch center. Solves a bunch of problems. I hope the people that came up with this idea have taken it to the Mayor’s office because it is a damn good idea. The other idea is to take the emergency management position currently filled by a trooper and consolidate that into the police chief’s job. Again this would save salary but it will cut into the current chief’s t-time. There is no reason for the taxpayers to pay extra for a job that can be managed appropriately by our own public safety department. Approx savings- about $35k. Remember all this pocket change adds up, and that is no lie.

  48. 49 phineast

The extra perk to the consolidations ideas is that Moffatt isn’t qualified to perform those duties……..so he can’t sue the town.
The other perk is that you can’t sue the town for job loss if it is cut from the budget……….
Estimated cost savings in attorney fees? A bundle.

  49. 50 jezebel282

    Phin,

    “Murray can do that right?”

Have you met Ellen Murray? She can do that, stop bleeding, dispatch the right equipment and personnel, extinguish the fire, balance the budget and not even break a nail.

  50. 51 jezebel282

Of course we won’t be hearing from Deputy Chief Maffett this week.

Deputy Chief Maffett will be attending the 22nd Annual Congressional Fire Service’s Seminar and Dinner in Washington D.C. from Tuesday April 27 to Friday, April 30.

    http://www.cfsi.org/dinner_about.asp

Yet another important assignment for Maffett. Only $226/night at the Hilton Washington. Who’s paying for THIS one?

  51. 52 rex525

    Jez and Phin,
If that’s true it sounds like a good time to change the locks on the FD and cut that position from the budget.

  52. 53 rex525

BTW Adam, in a request of transparency are WE paying for this one, OR is it against “the rules” to let us know?

  53. 54 phineast

Jez- I know Ms. Murray can run circles around the current DC- she already does-if Stratford taxpayers are paying for Moffat to go to Washington- the taxpayers are choosing to leave hm there, they can have him. If the town can’t afford to belong to organizations that important to its own function the FD shouldn’t be sending anyone on a Miron style junket-if he is paying for it himself-then we better not be paying salary-as it should be coming out of vacation time-private expense+private time.

Adam, if you are reading this could you please answer the question as to who is paying for this adventure? Thank you for your help. It is budget season and if we are going to comment to council we need to point them to where we would like the cuts should come from.

  54. 55 jezebel282

    Washington DC weather:
    Apr 28 Today
Sunny. High near 65F. Winds WNW at 15 to 25 mph.
    Apr 29 Tomorrow
Mainly sunny. High 72F. Winds W at 10 to 20 mph.
    Apr 30 Friday
Abundant sunshine. Highs in the mid 80s and lows in the mid 60s.

Nice weather for a trip. Not as nice as Palm Beach FL when Maffett went in February, but still nice. I hear the Capitol Grille is close by too.

    Hmmm…where to next?

  55. 56 jezebel282

    Phin,

“Adam, if you are reading this could you please answer the question as to who is paying for this adventure?”

A better question would have two parts. Who is paying for it and who approved it? It would be scary to think Maffett approved his own paid time ($1,425 for 4 days), not to mention $904 for the room and $250 (if he took the train in coach) transportation and $275 for an attendee ticket. About $3,000 cost to the Town not including meals.

Just a thought…how many firefighter’s boots can you get for $3,000? And where are those new radios?

Did Cavanaugh approve this? Did he even know about it? Did Mr. Thazhampallath approve it? He is the CAO, you know. Or did Adam Bauer, Chief of Staff, approve it? Maybe John Harkins himself?

Or is that one of those things that should not be disclosed to the public because it is so complicated?

  56. 57 1george1

If you want adam bauer to answer you, why not call him or e-mail him?

    First initial + last name + @townofstratford.com

    I think the # is 385-4001?

I wonder when mayor harkins will have a meet the mayor opportunity?
Whatever jimmy miron faults, he made himself available to meet constituents.

While his hand picked police were worthless related to the tire / report.
I didn’t have my house broken into on the day / time the mayor / assistants
chose to make sure I was out of the house.

  57. 58 jezebel282

    George,

“If you want adam bauer to answer you, why not call him or e-mail him?”

Part of the problem with private conversations and meetings is that they are private. No records, no documentation, nothing in writing.

For decades, most of Town government has operated in secret or in “executive” session. Public issues should be discussed in public. We end up with “consultants” like David Dunn or lawyers like Rich Buturla and Kent Miller or politicians like Norm Alrdrich and Richard Miron making our decisions. That hasn’t worked out so well for the voter or the taxpayer.

  58. 59 1george1

    Sorry Jeze

I had to do a triple take on post # 58.

    I thought I wrote it? 8)

Actually it was more detailed and specific than I choose to write. 😉

This is scaring me. You are passing me … on my local postings. 🙂

Next thing you may post a nasty on a Rockefeller or Brit Royal Crown?
Ooooops SPILL OVER ALERT = 1 LINE

The best thing about your post is that you wrote what everyone in
Town who is connected to the parties knows, but lack the b,,,s to
    make public!

The Fire / Police / P W / BoE should be mad at them for the situation
they put them in, making basicly good people who do not project cost
analysis or aggregate debt scenarios and revenue reductions/affects
into making the workers into the scapegoats.

While I know the union people liked me last month and are ticked this
month, I have still left side doors and back doors open for them, while
placing blame on local + State + Federal + International decisions and
decision makers, whick all affect Stratford

    – It is not de facto conspiracy. It is local / CT. / FED complicity based
on the way the system was set up and the existing process. of trick
    el down decisions.

  59. 60 jezebel282

    George,

“The Fire / Police / P W / BoE should be mad at them”

They can be mad all they want after they admit to the abuses of the last 10 years or so. At one time there were dozens of PW workers out sick or claiming disabilities like paper cuts. The same is true for the PD and FD. Honest to goodness, $75,000 (of taxpayer money) for someone’s false teeth because of “Bruxism”? Bulking up on OT the last two years of a 20+ year career?

    No one is guiltless.

  60. 62 rex525

    Jez,
“Adam, if you are reading this could you please answer the question as to who is paying for this adventure? A better question would have two parts. Who is paying for it and who approved it? The silence from the “chief of staff” on this subject speaks volumes, I also assume that the McNeil and Soto children have gone another week without their fathers receiving a pay check. I wonder how much food Moffet’s little adventure could have bought for those two families. Restore the pride?????

  61. 63 jezebel282

    Rex,

“The silence from the “chief of staff” on this subject speaks volumes,”

I have no knowledge that Mr. Bauer is stupid. Obviously, there is nothing he can write that would not generate outrage at the continued inaction of John Harkins.

“I also assume that the McNeil and Soto children have gone another week without their fathers receiving a pay check.”

    Ten months and 9 days.

“I wonder how much food Moffet’s little adventure could have bought for those two families.”

Let’s see….3 little girls for McNeil and how many for Soto?

  62. 64 1george1

    Rex + Jeze + readers,

    I concur.

With USPS I was out over 10 months, collected unemployment,
which was deducted when I won back all but 1 month back pay.
    I lost O. T..
    I bore added expenses.
I had to sell a building lot, I bought for retirement.

NOW PROJECT what 10 months suspension cost me / affected me
to the way it affects McNeil + Soto + Farmer.

It is a good thing they are good people.
It’s not a good idea to screw around with livelihoods of people trained
    in use of firearms!

There are very bad people within town,
    with police and political connections,
who have been on a Grand Theft gravy train.
I believe they were entrapped / set up.

If / when they are double crossed – I “might” be their stay outta jail
key for most …. NOT ALL … of them.

DISCLAIMER – Only if the entire system is corrupt, can they escape
    double cross …. MAYBE …

  63. 65 ronmoreau

    Jez,

“Let’s see….3 little girls for McNeil and how many for Soto?”

One little girl. She is 11 years old.

  64. 66 jezebel282

So we’ve got four little girls and two wives suffering as well.

Forget “Restore the Pride”. Can’t we at least eliminate the shame?

  65. 67 1george1

    Miliman report came in Friday.

It goes to the Town Council later in the week.

I am to get a copy prior to Tuesday’s public forum, per my request.
I just found out / did not realize – Bunnell Public Hearing is tonight
and not Wednesday, when I made agreement for Tuesday.

I wonder why I was not corrected?

I wonder what people are trying to hide?
Actually I and others have a darn good idea.

  66. 68 rex525

    Jez,
“Can’t we at least eliminate the shame?”

Jez “ELIMINATE THE SHAME” would probably be one hell of a campaign slogan for someone in the next election.

IT COULD GO SOMETHING LIKE THIS: “my rival for office ran on a campaign to restore the pride during the last election. Obviously that goal was far too lofty for the two disfunctional political parties here in town, therefore as an independant candidate for office I am setting the bar much lower and more realistic for our humble township. Vote for me in 2013 and I’ll vow to “ELIMINATE THE SHAME”,
my first act if I am elected is to bail out our wrongly accused police officers from debtor’s prison and upgrade their status to “suspended with pay” as they await their vindication in court. My second act will be to slash the Town Attorney’s budget 80% and cancel all current contracts for outside consultants (if the people currently responsible for certain decisions need consultants- you have the wrong people in those positions), my third act will be to replace the heads of ALL of our emergency service departments, we need honest public safety professionals in these positions, not political hacks. I’ll axe the head of public works while I’m at it for the same reason. Finally we will conduct a real nationwide search to find the best finance director in the country to help bail us out of this mess”
………………oh wait a minute, isn’t that what we thought the last candidate we elected was going to do????

  67. 69 mayor2013

oh wait a minute, isn’t that what we thought the last candidate we elected was going to do????

    We sure did!

  68. 70 1george1

I should have dusted off my BUMPER STICKERS:

Don’t STEAL: Stratford and CT Lawyers and politicians hate competition.

I added lines about prioroties and vote for George Mulligan.
That can be redacted or snipped.
    I only bave about 2,500 left … 😉

  69. 71 jezebel282

As we approach the six month anniversary of Harkins’ administration (this week) I thought it would be a good time to review his accomplishments:

    1. Justin Loschiavo terminated (was there a choice?)
    2. Ron Ing hired. (A friend of….wait for it….Edmund Winterbottom and David Dunn).
    3. Taxes raised.
    4. Shakespeare Theater back at square one
    5. LBW “sale” cancelled.

    Those are the positive things.

  70. 72 rex525

    Jez,
“2. Ron Ing hired. (A friend of….wait for it….Edmund Winterbottom and David Dunn)”

IF THAT IS IN FACT TRUE, between that, the Sue Collier appointment as Finance Director (with a $10,000.00 pay increase), Buturla, Reiderhauer, Cavanaugh, Moffet and McCarthy still on the payroll and McNeil and Soto STILL OFF the payroll who really running this town? DICK MIRON??

  71. 73 jezebel282

    Rex,

    “DICK MIRON??”

I’m trying to think of how you would tell the difference.

    Gimme a minute.

  72. 74 jezebel282

    Update:

Stratford assistant fire chief up for heroism honor

    Thursday, 13 May 2010 07:34

Stratford Assistant Fire Chief Daniel Ross is among nearly a dozen emergency responders nominated for Bridgeport Hospital’s Fairfield County Hero Award, which will be presented Thursday, May 20, at 11 a.m. in the Hollander Auditorium at the hospital, 267 Grant St., Bridgeport.

Established in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, the award recognizes the heroic actions of area police officers, firefighters and ambulance personnel and their important partnership with hospital trauma and emergency caregivers in saving lives.

Ross rescued a man from a Bowe Avenue house fire last October.

A total of 70 individuals, representing public safety departments in Bridgeport, Darien, Easton, Fairfield, Monroe, Norwalk, Shelton, Stratford, Trumbull, Westport as well as the Connecticut State Police, have been nominated for the Fairfield County Hero Award since its inception in 2002.

All nominees receive a plaque and Fairfield County Hero Award winners receive a distinctive obelisk-shaped statue.

    Thank you, Chief Ross!

IMHO, without our four Assistant Fire Chiefs ,Ellen Murray, Asst Chief – A Shift,
Thomas Murray, Asst Chief – B Shift, Timothy Brennan, Asst Chief – C Shift,
Daniel Ross, Asst Chief – D Shift, the SFD would have no leadership at all.

Psst…somebody wake up Brian Hansen, Curtis Maffett and James Cavanaugh and tell them Danny Ross won an award.

  73. 75 sudds

Not to diminish Mr. Ross’ accomplishment (which he truly deserves), but…

Last night I once again noticed a town fire truck being utilized for a “pizza run” to Paradise Pizza (the boys must be getting sick of Vazzy’s).

Didn’t we just have to pay for new(ish) firetrucks because the other ones were breaking down?

And don’t we have like 27,000 Italian places in Stratford that deliver? (God knows I get AT LEAST two a month attached to my screen door)

When I am Councilman… use of town fire trucks for personal business will be an offense subject to TERMINATION!!!

    ~~ Sudds for D-3 Council – 2011 ~~

“because the nickel-and-diming of our citizens is now costing each of us an additional $1,000+ a year”

  74. 76 1george1

    R. Ing has been the only hire / promotion who impressed me in Budget
Workshops, whereas he “appears” to understand and communicate.

  75. 77 jezebel282

    Sudds,

“Didn’t we just have to pay for new(ish) firetrucks because the other ones were breaking down? ”

And the $1.5 Million in attorney fees doesn’t bother you?

  76. 78 sudds

“And the $1.5 Million in attorney fees doesn’t bother you?”

It won’t once I am on the front page of the Post/Star showing (with, who woulda thunk it) ACTUAL estimates for cost SAVINGS that the town could see via hiring a town attorney (and not out-sourcing our legal matters to “consultants”)!!!

Why my constituents give me the drum… (unlike Catalano) I will beat it!! (hmm… that didn’t sound too good, did it? LOL!)

But getting back on track… I cannot see why $350k (TOPS!) wouldn’t be enough! $150k for an attorney, $75k for a clerk, $50k for a receptionist, and $75k for all the other “stuff”.

Hmm… if the Mayor/Council just added $1,000,000+ and it’s going to COST us each $1,000+… what do all you “lurkers” out there think would happen if we SAVE the town $1,000,000+???

    2 x > $ 400,000 for NON – CUSTOMED FIRE TRUCK not EQUIPPED +
$ 100,000 for EQUIPMENT for 2 FIRE TRUCKS

Wasn’t it a certain former Town Councilor’s company who won
    most of the BIDS?

    Wait

    I forgot

    There was an emergency.
    There was NO BIDS

That ex-Town Councilor was on the Council for almost 9 or 10 years
as an unpaid volunteer …. thank you for the lucky circumstance

    Hmmm
    $ 400,000 + 400,000 = $ 800,000
    $ 230,000 + 230,000 = $ 460,000 fully equipped

    “This IS Stratford!” 😦

  78. 80 1george1

When a certain person was Town Council Chairman the Miron proposed
and Town Council approved FIRE DEPT Budget was

    $ 4,550,000 Straight time
    $ 1,450,000 Over Time or $ 27,900 a WEEK BUDGETED OT
or extra $ 279 week pay for 100 employee, almost $ 15,000 extra year

Wonder why there was a FIRE TURCK Emergency after none for 10 years? 😦

    How does Stratford spell B R I B E R Y ?

Ummmm I’m gonna go out on a limb here George, but maybe there was an emergency, but no one called you to tell you about it (l.o.l.- just joshing you). I believe if there was an underhanded deal here the word would have gotten out about it by now, who the hell owes anything to Jim Feehan anyhow? There is no way with the cast of characters you mentioned that everyone would be on the same page “this IS Stratford”. Even if that were possible, someone would have shot their mouth off by now. As much as I’d like to see a percentage of those you named thrown in the slammer, I don’t see it happening on this issue (but I could be wrong “this IS Stratford).

Sudds, I agree with you on using Fire Trucks for personal business, but don’t you think the resturants that don’t deliver would have a legitimate gripe (they pay taxes too you know) ? Either way, COULD WE PLEASE get McNeil and Soto back to work before we fire any other Town employees. It seems every time we replace some, things around here get even worse. I’m starting to wish we could hire Ben Branyan back as Town Manager (at double his pay would still be cheaper), scrap all this costly Mayor nonsense and get back to somewhat normal. Then at least I might be able to sell my house (oh I forgot “this IS Stratford”).

BTW- don’t start sounding like your opponent…you’ll still get my donation and my vote but I won’t bring the keg.

    Jez, “Thank you, Chief Ross!
IMHO, without our four Assistant Fire Chiefs ,Ellen Murray, Asst Chief – A Shift,
Thomas Murray, Asst Chief – B Shift, Timothy Brennan, Asst Chief – C Shift,
Daniel Ross, Asst Chief – D Shift, the SFD would have no leadership at all.”

    Sounds that way,
Perhaps Mayor Harkins should consider Chief Ross as the immediate replacement for James “the fire liar” Cavanaugh (oh I forgot “this IS Stratford”).

  82. 84 jezebel282

    Rex,

“I’m starting to wish we could hire Ben Branyan back as Town Manager ”

I agree, but for Chrissakes don’t let him near the health plan.

“Perhaps Mayor Harkins should consider Chief Ross as the immediate replacement for James “the fire liar” Cavanaugh”

Either Ellen Murray,Thomas Murray, Timothy Brennan or Daniel Ross would be an excellent choice. I would go with Ellen Murray myself. I would finally have something to be proud of about Stratford; a female fire chief.

Maybe John Conway….he IS a Republican, you know.

  83. 85 rex525

Jez, “Maybe John Conway….he IS a Republican, you know.”

    NOBODY’S PERFECT

  84. 86 1george1

    Rex,
    Maybe there was an emergency?

Well maybe if they bonded for and bought 1 fire truck 6 – 8 years ago
and bonded and bought another fire truck 3 – 5 years ago, there would
    have been NO EMERGENCY?

What kind of Stamford Fireman was Feehan, who would not spring for a
FIRE TRUCK for Statford, WHILE he was on the TOWN COUNCIL or while
he was the TOWN COUNCIL CHAIRMAN.

Rex, I appreciate past support …..

In this case I see a whole in your logic big enought to drive a fleet of
    FIRE TRUCKS through.

  85. 87 1george1

Ben Branyan and Ben Barnes are the two best qualified people in town
to be the mayor from COO / CAO perspective.

Gavin has the intelligence and expertise.

Barnhart and Feeney did the job of Town Manager.
Yet those 2 did whatever they were told!

However, the way the political system exists there is no one who could
do the job, until the powers that are make the decision NOW is the time!

I believe that time is coming and the INTENT was to MAKE it worse, to set
the table for the desired objective.

If I wanted union rep … I would want Tom Murray of the ones I have seen.

Conway, Tom, Ellen, and Dan are likely excellent firemen / firepeople.

    HOWEVER

    HOWEVER

I believe none deserve the position of TRUST of FIRE CHIEF, for the
same REASON I do NOT believe GAVIN, BARNHART, and FEENEY deserves
to be considered for STRATFORD MAYOR.

While each fireperson and Gavin as EMS has saved lives, can anyone
claim with a straight face that the OVERTIME and PENSION ABUSE did
not have an affect on people’s taxes and ability to pay bills?

A couple years ago, I let the thermostat get low.
    I caught a cold.
    The cold became bronchitis.
The cold / bronchitis became pneumonia.
Had I been older and more frail and with less resources it could have
    been fatal?

There is a fiduciary obligation in being police, fire, ems, councilor,
manager which transcends the immediate job description.

Please forward the above to Tom / Ellen, Dan, Gavin, Ben, John.

I am not knocking anyone as a person or professional.

However, I want a mayor who cares about all of the people and not
just those who donate, or vote for, or work for keeping their own
    scams and money machines going.

Paying $ 900,000 for 2 fire truck that should cost $ 460,000 is a disgrace.

Setting $ 28,000 a week in guarneteed FIRE DEPT OT and the complete
lies related to POLICE JAN 2008 retires is a disgrace.

Everyone who reads this blog knows the truth that Tammany like
positions have milked the town dry and allowed the parties and
officials to delay assets which could have kept mil rate at 20 or
    below.

And had you been healthier in the first place. Or if my grandmother had…never mind.

“I believe none deserve the position of TRUST of FIRE CHIEF,”

May I remind you that (aside from risking their lives and working 24 hour shift and raising families) they are also required to join the union. In addition, had there been sufficient staffing to alleviate call backs and OT, we would not be discussing this. Oh…and then there is the little detail that not a single one of them has EVER lied to the public, the mayor or their own staff.

    “Jeze stated:
not a single one of them has EVER lied to the public,
the mayor or their own staff.”

How was it that Clinton asked about defining?

The best LIAR, always tells the truth.
Ron Reagan could make statements the press and others KNEW
    was NOT TRUE.
However, it appeared Reagan had been briefed and appeared
to believe those things he had been told.

Locally, many of Weisel’s reports reminded me of those.
How much was ommitted and whose positions were omitted?

There are truths and lies of
    Commission
    Ommission

I would not believe many documents in Town Hall, Courts,
    Business, Government.

However, it is clear who the personnel have been and following
the money leads directly to their door steps.

And following the money also projects to those hidden behind
the scenes, since the CONSTITUTION has ALWAYS ALLOWED the
GOVERNMENT to keep certain things secret.

The police, fire, pw, supervisors, education, and others all benefitted
from the Mirons / Burturlas – did they or did they NOT?

  94. 96 jezebel282

    George,

“The police, fire, pw, supervisors, education, and others all benefitted
from the Mirons / Burturlas – did they or did they NOT?”

I’m really not sure what you are going on about. I’m not convinced you know either. To paraphrase, you are entitled to your own opinion but not your own facts.

Almost all of the members including the president and vice president of the Supervisor’s Union were let go by Miron. Joe McNeil and Orlando Soto would not claim to have benefited from Miron (or Harkins for that matter). Ellen Murray was passed over for promotion in favor of a retired, less qualified and more expensive candidate from another state. Doug O’Meara was disabled, forced to retire and then persecuted. And the list goes on.

Just two days ago you implied that Christian Miron was hired by PW in return for dropping his suit. That is plainly false. Enough already.

  95. 97 sudds

“COULD WE PLEASE get McNeil and Soto back to work…”

AGREED… this entire travesty is a blight on our community!

Mayor Harkins needs to wake up and realize that the fact that he continues to allow himself to be swayed by Chief Buturla just continues to prove that he is NOT a very leader!!!

    Mayor Harkins:

    Lead (ummm, not yet),
Follow (is that really what you were elected for?),
or get out of the way (seems to be his method of choice… right Adam?)

  96. 98 rex525

George, “Well maybe if they bonded for and bought 1 fire truck 6 – 8 years ago
and bonded and bought another fire truck 3 – 5 years ago, there would
    have been NO EMERGENCY?”

I AGREE, but it appears that they had not.

    George,
“Conway, Tom, Ellen, and Dan are likely excellent firemen / firepeople.
HOWEVER I believe none deserve the position of TRUST of FIRE CHIEF, for the
same REASON I do NOT believe GAVIN, BARNHART, and FEENEY deserves

Huh??? oh well, I guess that’s one vote to keep the fire liar, but George I have to disagree with you on this one. As for the trust issue, I remember one of them seemingly risk their job to inform the public of these deficiencies a few months ago, are you saying that was an act??

  97. 99 rex525

    Sudds,
“Mayor Harkins needs to wake up and realize that the fact that he continues to allow himself to be swayed by Chief Buturla just continues to prove that he is NOT a very (I think you wanted to put STRONG) leader!!!”

BINGO! AGREED, you got your keg back.

  98. 100 1george1

Just two days ago you implied that Christian Miron was hired by PW in
return for dropping his suit. That is plainly false. Enough already.

“I ASKED if it was TRUE that CHRISTIAN MIRON was working for PW and
    doing a good job?”

I’m really not sure what you are going on about.
I’m not convinced you know either.
To paraphrase, you are entitled to your own opinion but not your own facts.
PLEASE DON’T WRITE that I IMPLIED ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Had it occured to you Jeze that I was looking for confirmation on what
someone told me, and surprized me, since I (long ago) agreed with your
hypothesis that money for Christian from Town Attorneys, would pay off
Dick’s bills and have money left over for ….

Just because someone I like tells me something, I do not take it as being
true, because that person might have been lied to ……
    Perhaps you can reflect and project into some of your O P I N I O N S ?

    ——-

There are things Jeze that I DO KNOW to be absolutely true and confirmed
on multiple sources, which sometimes contradict your opinions.

However, we often agree to disagree = it helps getting closer to the truth.

Jeze – It is YOUR CONTENTION that ALL of the people you LIKE
    NEVER LIE?
    HAVE NOT ABUSED THE SYSTEM?
HAVE NOT PROFITED from the SYSTEM?
ARE NOT PART of the PROBLEM?

I am not trying to imply anything, nor put words in your mouth
    I am asking questions?

Jeze, I give you props in that what was not relevant in the past,
is now partially relevant related to the verical system?

Jeze, I give you props in that instead of deleting, you move stuff.

Jeze, I give you props in that some of the positions I have long held,
you now agree with, at least in part.

Jeze, I give you props in that much (far from all) of things you and
OTHERS post, turn out to be TRUE on OBJECTIVE FACTS / CIRCUMSTANCES

However, the same way you or others can disagree with my opinions or
conclusions ….. I can do so as well.

  99. 101 1george1

    Rex,

    We agree on point one.

We partially disagree on point two.
Where I would have completely agree on a certain perspective
in the past ….. there are pending replies which can affect if
I continue to believe, what I prefer to believe.

I can not eleaborate due to new facts and that there may be
reasons far beyond my questions, that I am not getting answers?
On this I do not like being obscure.
I have to hold off, until I am more sure.

  100. 102 jezebel282

    Update:

OK let’s see if we have this straight; Naugatuck gets Ellen Murray as Deputy Fire Chief and we get Curtis Maffet?
    (Nice move Miron.)

    Deputy Chief Ellen Murray

Note to Sudds: Yes, yes. We know. She’s a babe.

  101. 103 mikereynolds

    That’s Ellen Murray?? Wow.

  102. 104 jezebel282

    Mike,

    “That’s Ellen Murray?? Wow.”

I am sure you are referring to her extensive education (graduate school), paramedic certification and 27 years of service and training.

But hey, Miron thought Curtis Maffet was a better choice.

  103. 105 sudds

“Note to Sudds: Yes, yes. We know. She’s a babe.”

    1) Even Mike would like a babe between those two.

    2) She looks way too non-inbred to be working in Naugatuck.

    3) Is she still in town… I might need mouth-to-mouth!!!

    4) However, at the end of the day… she’s no PCS!!! 😉

  104. 106 jezebel282

    Sudds,

    No surprise in your comments.

Unfortunately, I feel the citizens of Naugatuck will be doing better than us. They seem to be much smarter too.
