Council Agendas

09Jan12

Desperate Taxpayer

With most taxpayers reaching deep into their pockets to come up with the second half of their personal property taxes and sewer use “fees” this month, the new Council is preparing to meet this challenge head on by voting to allow golf carts on Town roads and prohibiting the wanton feeding of wild animals. And politicians wonder why there is always such a low turnout at election time. With an 8 to 2 majority on the Council and an RTC member in the mayor’s office our politicians are taking the bull by the horns and going straight after the overfed wildlife and the anti-golf cart attitude in this Town. (How many people own golf carts? Is this a problem here?)

In the meantime, our Town Attorney seems to be quite content with his $2+ MILLION budget and the Town’s pension obligations just get more and more out of control. Can’t anyone manage to get an actually important item on the Council agenda?

The clock is ticking….the budget process (if any) is about to begin. With such an overwhelming majority of RTC members in control, we expect some serious movement at some point.

    GM > YEAH – Another LOAD of C A R P !

Town Attorney seems to be quite content with his $2+ MILLION
    budget and the Town’s
pension obligations just get more and more out of control.
Can’t anyone manage to get an
actually important item on the Council agenda?

GM > Google Charlie Reese 1980s Orlando Sentinal article:
“545 people responsible for all of US WOES.”
Project that to Stratford KEY involved PEOPLE.
Things are the way they are, because that’s the way certain
    people want it to be.

JEZE – can you have it both ways?
Staunchly defending certain people as can do no wrong, then pointing
out where the problem lies? It is a Public Treasury that is being drained
intentionally, to be able to FORCE the CHANGES they WANT MADE.

With an 8 to 2 majority on the Council and an RTC member in the

At least when the MIRONS were causing the smoke n mirrors, they
knew how to create somewhat relevant smoke n mirrors.

Should golf carts be used to feed wild animals?

    George,

“Staunchly defending certain people as can do no wrong”

Remind me again who it is that I staunchly supported. I may be the most disliked writer in Stratford so it’s hard to remember who likes me.

  3. 3 1george1

Jeze, now you are stepping on my turf ….
The Play Write endorsed me for Town Council District # 3 candidate
against your man Gavin (who I respect in many ways for multiple
reasons) because “George Mulligan is the most hated man in Town
    Hall.”

At the time you know who was almost 1/2 way through his 4 years.
I guess that gave me extra credit with you.

Maybe I am the most HATED & you are the most DISLIKED?

  4. 4 jezebel282

    George,

“George Mulligan is the most hated man in Town
    Hall.”

    Ok, fine. You win.

  5. 5 1george1

    Yeah ….. uh oh … wait a minute ….

    Revote .. Revote ..

Is that why you are anonymous?

  6. 6 jezebel282

    ROTFLMAO!

“Is that why you are anonymous?”

Nope. But my family has enough to deal with just living with me.

  7. 7 1george1

“Nope. But my family has enough to deal with just living with me.”

Why is it that I think you are not just being modest?

  8. 8 jezebel282

    George,

“Why is it that I think you are not just being modest?”

Modesty has nothing to do with it. The simple truth is that this blog and everything written on it is not about me. It just doesn’t matter who I am or what I do. What matters is that I live in this Town, I vote and I pay taxes here. Just like everyone else. It is important that everyone has a place that they can express their opinions freely without fear or retribution. (More identities have been revealed on Topix than here).

For example, this topic indicates what our new council believes are the critical matters they should devote their attention to; Golf carts and feeding birds. They are responsible for our $180 million budget and they are acting like a condo association instead. I think more residents than just myself find that a tad irresponsible.

Joe Kubic & Council tabled the Start time to ORDINANCE.
    COMMITTEE

Joe Kubic commented IF the PUBLIC FORUM is affected,
it is a separate ISSUE also to be handled in ORDINANCE
    COMMITTEE.

I asked several people IF there was INTENT to ELIMINATE
    PUBLIC FORUM.

I got a RANGE of ANSWERS.

One reoccuring theme was to LIMIT PUBLIC FORUM COMMENTS
to WHATEVER is ON the AGENDA.

I note things can be NOT on the AGENDA, like Health Care costs
    so we could not comment.
One of the Councilors waives the rules … NOW they can do as
they please, and the TV WATCHING PUBLIC is IGNORANT.

The PRESS REPORTS the NEWS, but can’t create the NEWS.
    By eliminating the Public Forum
By limiting the TOPICS of the Public Forum
By limiting the CONTENT of various Public Forum speakers

Would that be in the INTERESTS of
    POLITICIANS?
    LAWYERS?
    TREASURY RECIPIENTS?
    RULE BENDERS & SHAPERS?
    PUBLIC INTERESTS?

    Put it another way.
Suppose 45 members of EMS wanted to address a PUBLIC SAFETY
ISSUE at TOWN COUNCIL PUBLIC FORUM that just happened &
was NOT on the AGENDA? They could not speak to Town Council
on topic of their choice IF potential rule changes take place that
will be discussed at ORDINANCE COMMITTEE!

Suppose that we just found out some recent hires on the POLICE
DEPARTMENT created a CHAPTER of the ARYAN BROTHERHOOD
and that morning invaded homes of people of ancestory of Irish,
Jews, Black, Italian, Pole, Spanish or what ever or some group
had targeted & afflicted WASPS or others ….
By Town Council RULES of ORDER done in ORDINANCE COMMITTEE
whoever has a REQUEST for REDRESS of GRIEVANCE is outta luck if
it is NOT on the AGENDA.

JIM MIRON made 10 minutes available 3 times a week, every week
with only a few exceptions to meet with the Public.

How does that compare with HARKINS

How does that compare with MALLOY lowering Public Forum to 3 or
4 minutes, from 5 minutes, unless you are MIKE COSTELLO who
    had almost 10 minutes?
Did DOM run as PAYOFF for Judith Terrace?

How does that compare with KUBIC changing Town Council
start time which will affect Public Forum
    1 – Start Time
    2 – Available total Time
3 – Possibly Eliminate Public Forum
4 – Possibly Eliminate Public Forum freedom of speach for topics
of choice rather than whatever Lawyers & RTC can dream up?

  10. 10 1george1

Jeze, where did you move my post from the other day?
    This has no search capability

  11. 12 1george1

    thank u

  12. 13 jezebel282

    George,

“How does that compare with HARKINS”

About the same. Instead of meeting with Ashley or Heather under Miron, now we will have a new “Constituent Representative”. That way, Harkins doesn’t have to clear calendar space to actually meet with citizens. Miron just didn’t bother showing up. Harkins can have an actual person tell citizens that they aren’t important enough to meet the mayor.

  13. 14 1george1

I met Jim 1 to 3 times a week his first 6 months.

Where else would he have gotten ideas?

    You are a tough crowd.
At least Jim met people, even if it was to plagarize, if he did?

  14. 15 portia1776

Jez and I profoundly disagree on national issues. I stand principally opposed to the bipartisan political class who are daily shearing what is left of our individual civil and economic liberties. (Did I not predict the precipitous fall in America’s ranking of economic freedom? The utter failure of the stimuli and “trickle down government”? The unbearable burden of the Bush and Obama legacy on our well being? How Americans would be forced to pay for President Obama’s disgusting sinophobia?)

Jez disliked Bush, but gives a shrug to President Obama, who in so many ways is Bush 2.0. Bush is to Obama what Hoover was to F.D. Roosevelt – with the same devastating results for all of us. In President Obama’s latest performance, the SOTU, he glorified the regimentation of society, the command-and-control of the economy, uniformity of opinion, corporatism, nationalism, and protectionism. For now, I ask only for Jez to remind us, what was the result of world leaders past who disdained individualism, internationalism, creativity, free enterprise and trade, equality under the law, and diversity? Who were those, again, who so loved to run their governments with expedient orders because time could not be wasted on legal niceties like individual rights, demanded nothing less than unquestioning obedience to their decrees, and were completely intolerant of the very existence of any dissent no matter how insignificant? Hint none of the countries afflicted with such “Progressive” leaders have ever became what the United States once was — a superpower with a free, proud, and prosperous people. Need another hint? Nearly all such states have not even been able to consistently feed their socialist slaves, I mean, citizens. Throughout the first decade of this new century we have been inexplicably walking, now under Obama marching, on the “road to serfdom.”

Too smart to believe the painfully obvious lies of the Obama administration, Jez, as Marxists would say, lives with the contradiction between the truth and the official Obama Party line. (Still waiting to know, Jez, if you can at least abide that this administration *should not violate* the government regulations called the Constitution’s 1st and 4th Amendments?)

Putting the forgoing aside for the moment, I actually came today to agree with Jez on our biggest local problem — the rarity of real Republicans. You see, Jez is all for higher taxes and more regulations provided they are levied on some unknown other. But, in Stratford, when Republicans behave like Democrats by recklessly spending, blocking business expansion, preventing businesses from coming to town, raising taxes every year, engaging in political patronage, letting legal fees run rampant, and trying to compete with private businesses, Jez has to directly pay for the resulting folly.

What can be done about this? For starters, we who proudly championed the anti-Miron cause have to be critical of the alternatives. Who here has done more to expose Sen. Kevin Kelly’s hypocrisy, dishonesty, and stupidly than this admitted Kelly voter and yet to what gain? No on has ever refuted what I wrote about Kelly. One person offered the weakest of defenses by hilariously accusing me of being ex-Mayor Moron.

With the magnificent defeat of the Mironistas, including Robyn Greenspan and others who thought they were slippery enough to evade voter scrutiny of their DTC records, we have a great opportunity to advance the positive changes that Stratford has always needed but has never had the wherewithal to achieve. But this is only possible if we start demanding more of *our* side’s representatives.

As if anyone needed another example, Sen. Kevin Kelly sent a brochure a few months back with the headline “CREATING JOBS, GROWING THE ECONOMY.” In it he touts his slovenly desire for a one-party, sorry “bipartisan,” state and the supposed “positive impact” of the “THE BIPARTISAN JOBS BILL.” “Although the bill will not turn the economic tide overnight,” contains no spending cuts for our deeply indebted state government, has no metrics of success, and nary a word of when we might expect any signs of improvement (you know, like when one new net job will be created, which would be our first in over 22 years?), it sounds just dandy. “$20 million for manufacturing programs in community and technical colleges”? At a time when taxes (including the business existence tax) and regulations have driven manufactures out of the state and are putting pressure on the remaining holdouts to leave? “Strategies to ensure Connecticut workers have the skill and education our businesses need”? This means what exactly? And, um, private businesses are in no sense “ours,” Comrade Kelly. “Commitment from Governor Malloy to fund critical improvements to vo-tech high schools”? Unless the bill allocates funding, Gov. Malloy’s commitment is worthless. “New job creation incentives”, “Increased financial assistance and access to loans and grants”, “$25 million for startup loans, investments and matching grants in each of the next five years”, “Incentives to increase investments in promising high-tech and emerging technology companies”? So instead of lowering taxes and regulations for everyone, you know creating the environment in which free enterprise can occur, tens of millions of dollars we don’t have will be wasted by the masters of the universe in Hartford with the same loving care with which federal financial regulators looked after Obama administration crony Jon “what 100 billion dollars?” Corzine.

Sure, Kelly, Malloy, and the rest know best… that is why Connecticut leads the country in the lowest projected national job growth rate for the next four years (How could it be, Jez, that according to the New Haven Register “EDITORIAL: Connecticut has zero job growth since 1990 while government spending has increased 250%” http://www.nhregister.com/articles/2011/02/01/opinion/doc4d4727fc9ad7f148341951.txt ?) In fairness to the bipartisans, they did say “jobs” not “new jobs” or “job growth,” but perhaps time in the special (costly) extended legislation session was not long enough.

Who do you think the “bipartisan jobs bill” is going to be incentivize — businesses with political connections or those without? How do you think “most promising… companies” are going to be selected — on the merits or because of political pull? Even if the government bureaucrats doing the selecting are completely selfless (yeah right) what makes them more qualified than individuals within the marketplace voluntarily deciding to invest their own money in such risky ventures? As the coerced contributors, sorry “taxpayers,” to such cant, it is our obligation to ask these questions and demand answers.

For shame, too many seem content to only read the rest of Kelly’s brochure, with its Republican bromides about “REDUCING GOVERNMENT SPENDING, LOWERING TAXES,” and ignore his record of doing the exact opposite as championed on the preceding pages.

Those who wish to be treated as sheep should not complain when sheared too closely.

  15. 16 jezebel282

    Portia,

“Jez and I profoundly disagree ”

I doubt I would use the word “profoundly”. Maybe “honestly”, but not profoundly. You simply tend to be absolutist in your philosophy. Any comprise is considered evil in your world.

“world leaders past who disdained individualism, internationalism, creativity, free enterprise and trade, equality under the law, and diversity?”
Have we had any who didn’t? Who has lived up to your ideals?

“inexplicably walking, now under Obama marching, on the “road to serfdom.”
And not under say, Romney, Gringrich, Bush or Dick Cheney? Only Obama?

“You see, Jez is all for higher taxes and more regulations provided they are levied on some unknown other.”
So I shouldn’t be working so hard on this 1040 because I really don’t care?

“Jez has to directly pay for the resulting folly. ”
I’m pretty sure all residents and businesses have to pay for that. Not just me.

“But, in Stratford, when Republicans behave like Democrats by recklessly spending, blocking business expansion, preventing businesses from coming to town, raising taxes every year, engaging in political patronage, letting legal fees run rampant, and trying to compete with private businesses,”

The incompetence and greed here has nothing to do with any philosophy other than, you know, incompetence and greed. On national issues we are confronted with our vote being one in millions. In Stratford, some elections are won or lost by single digits. Voting here can actually make a difference.

As for the rest….I’m not really sure what point you are trying to make. Except, of course, that Barack Obama is the Anti-Christ according to you.

When stripping away the partisan posturing, Jeze, Portia, and I
agree with many issues in the above posts.

    Kelly = Miron = Burturlas = Norm / DeCilios.

    Kubic < Malloy < Henrick < Feehan < Crudo / Norm < Calzone's
    Council < Cabral < Koperwhats < Rose < << Williams < Burturla

    Bishop / Kelly = Burturla / Berchem = Florek O'Neil =
    Willinger / Bucci = Bloom / Steinberg / O'Neill / Birney

    Morrison = DeLauro = Dodd = Weicker = Lieberman = Blumenthal

    Bushs / Cheney / Obama / Clintons / Reagan / Carter / Ford /
    Rockefellers = Hitler / Stalin / Mao / Franco / ToJo / Mussolini
    Churchill / Chamberlin / Windsors-Hanovers

All fronts for the same mindset.
