One Year of Disgrace

It has been one full year since Assistant Fire Chief Thomas Murray retired. After being the most highly decorated firefighter in Stratford and giving the residents and businesses of Stratford twenty five years of loyal and dedicated service, the Town of Stratford continues to withhold every penny of Chief Murray’s well-earned pension. By way of review, the Town delayed and bungled the staffing of the position of Assistant Fire Chief (the ones who actually go to the fire) causing massive amounts of unnecessary overtime. This despite repeated requests from the two remaining Assistant Chiefs to resolve the matter.

To date, the Town has refused to pay Chief Murray the pension that he has earned. The Town claims that the pension amount is too high. We agree. The pension amount is far too high. What the Town does not mention is that the reason it is high is because the Town made no move to staff the Assistant Chief positions to the required level. As we have stated previously, the Town permitted two positions to remain vacant for over a year. This forced the two remaining Assistant Chiefs to divide 168 hours/week between them. That leaves an 84 hour/week schedule for the two Assistant Chiefs. Whatever the political issues are, and being an election year we can guarantee they are substantial, the fact remains that the Town is in clear violation of signed contracts.

We find this (in)action on the Town’s part…well…disgraceful.

The real shame is that at present the town will only have to pay the back pension owed with no punitive damages!! So Stratford gets to hold the money for whatever length of time and then hands it over with no punitive actions???

I REALLY hope that he can get punitive damages!!!

    Ned,

Let’s see…willful violation of a contract, no income for 1 year (so far), legal expenses…I just cannot imagine that there will be no punitive damages. Of course the ones that will pay the punitive damages will be us, as usual.

    Prof,

    “Can I get a CHAAAAAA-CHING!!”

No. No, you can’t. At the end of this debacle there will be three winners and only one loser. Chief Murray will win and so will the attorneys for both sides. The only loser in this will be the Stratford taxpayer. You can rest assured that neither the mayor nor the HR Director will accept any responsibility for any of this.

    Update:

    Thirteen months and counting.

The only real question here will be how much extra the taxpayers will shell out for attorneys and court costs. After a long while and several invoices from attorneys, the Town will lose and like all cases the Town loses will appeal (more attorney invoices) and lose again.

And yet another month goes by while Chief Murray twists in the wind.

I understand the “operative” phrase for the Chief is “Let Freedom Ring”!! Life starts with “Freedom”. Will someone please get the Chief an old New England Farm “Cow Bell”, to ring for “Freedom”?????

    Ned,

“get the Chief an old New England Farm “Cow Bell”

Perhaps a dunce cap would be more appropriate. I seem to recall in the last mayoral campaign that Chief Murray planted more lawn signs for Harkins than anyone and showed up at every single campaign event for Harkins. Sadly, given Chief Murray’s integrity and, well, honor, one would have to assume that Harkins had some too.

I wonder how long it will take to remove the knife from Chief Murray’s back.
