Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

30Oct15

Everyone knows by now that these were mailed to nearly every residence in Stratford. In all the time of editing this blog and decades of residing in this town, we have never seen anything as desperate or disgusting.

What follows below are the names of the individuals and companies that funded (and continue to fund) this disgusting piece of politics at its lowest. They are all individually and collectively supporters of the Vote Yes Pay Less Political Action Committee. We are particularly stunned and appalled at the involvement of Stratford’s top public safety officials.

They deserve this public shaming so they make sure this never happens again. This is NOT politics as usual as some will defensively respond. This is personal, its slanderous and its simply intimidation of the worst kind. If you speak out against injustice and try and right an obvious wrong that this sewer sale is, then they will come after you and your family and dig up whatever.

I hope the citizens of this town who have blindly followed the Mayor and the Vote Yes Pay Less PAC voice their disgust on Tuesday November 3rd and vote these bums out of office.

Perhaps the next time you see one of these “supporters” at a restaurant or public event you can let them know how ashamed they should be. The least they can do is apologize to Steve, Tina and Stephanie.

  2. 2 mikereynolds

Henry how is that mailing slanderous? Don’t get me wrong, its terrible and politics at its worst. But slanderous? Are any of those points false? If no, then it doesn’t reach the level of slander. Slimey? Yes. Disgusting? Yes

I’m wondering how much this is going to backfire on the Vote Yes folks.

  3. 3 Rockannand

“I’m wondering how much this is going to backfire on the Vote Yes folks.”
A lot. I intend to keep this going viral through every digital media and local media channel i can.

I know its not technically slanderous, but in the court of public opinion, all of the people and businesses need to be called out and shamed for what they have wrought. We shall see what kind of integrity they have now. We all know who masterminded this and i hope those members of the RTC who hate this too take care of him after the election.

  4. 4 shanliss

Lou DeCilio is trying to MOLEST Stratford’s democracy. Perhaps it runs in the family. A lot of enablers on that list, too.

  5. 5 jezebel282

    Mike,

We are not aware that Stephen Raguskas is a candidate for any office. We are also not sure that being a member of a political party or committee of that party makes an individual a “public personality”. Mr. Raguskas may well have a very good case of libel or defamation to bring against the Vote Yes pay less PAC.

(Slander is verbal. Libel is printed)

In fact, mailing embarrassing data of private citizens just because they are, say, registered Republicans, would have a very chilling effect on democracy.
For that matter, there are multiple people on the VYPL Pac that have had their own troubles with the law and the courts.

  6. 6 mikereynolds

Good point about libel vs. slander.

The definition of libel is a published false statement that is damaging to a person’s reputation; a written defamation.

If he owes back taxes its not libel.

I don’t agree with what they did, especially since he isn’t running for office.

Lots of town attorneys and dept heads on this list- FOLLOW THE MONEY!!!

  8. 8 jezebel282

    Mike,

We have no idea if these items are true or false. It is actually irrelevant. On its face it’s false because no one pays sewer taxes. They are fees. Back taxes on property is a claim by the Town, if it is true at all. Claims by the Town, like voters have no right to a referendum, can be wrong. That’s what courts are for.

In any event, we agree. This is as low and slimy as we have ever seen. The best solution is to make sure that we vote no and reject the type of candidate selected by Harkins/Decilio.

  9. This was disgusting. What I do know about these people is that they have fought for our right to vote for or against the WPCA sale and have been vocal opponents against the sale. That’s why they are targeted.

Who next? There are a great number of people it can be, including myself. I know MANY people who have had financial difficulties since the economic downfall. Stratford has not come back.

One woman posted on FB that her taxes only decreased when Harkins was elected but doesn’t understand that it’s because the property values decreased, not the mil rate. Lots of misguided perceptions here.

Four days, eight hours and hopefully it will be a New Stratford dawning!

  10. 10 Rockannand

I am compiling list #2. Its even longer with many repeat contributors at another fund-raiser they had at Mill River. Its the amounts they have paid in that is staggering. Over $33K paid in and $25K paid out for mailers, etc. They actually paid Rich Fredette $250 to distribute signs all over town.

Here is just a sampling and the total amount they have contributed:

    Christopher Pia $500
    Michael Mauzerall $800
    Randy Vidal $700
    David Fuller $250
    Lou DeCilio $450
    Tom Cotter $200
    John Florek $225
Andrew Testo $425 (Of the Wall Rest)

Over 30 businesses in all, most of whom got business and turned round and made mostly $500 donations. Total business donations of $22,000 and individuals totals over $11,000

Jim Connor’s company leads the way with $5K Bridgeport Fittings.

I’ll try to post the entire list before end of day.

  11. I hear there’s more mailings arriving today in people’s mailboxes. One specifically targeting Tina. I’m waiting – private citizens aren’t safe either!

  12. Yes, three more mailers today. One for Barnaby, One for Fredette and one For the “Vote Yes” mess.
Hand delivered….pulled into my driveway as person was delivering the mailers, door to door on Housatonic Ave.

  13. If I have any – I’m returning them right to RTC HQ later today!

  14. 14 ronmoreau

    Jez,

“We are not aware that Stephen Raguskas is a candidate for any office. We are also not sure that being a member of a political party or committee of that party makes an individual a “public personality”

If Mr. Raguskas is a member of the Stratford Democratic Town Committee, he is an elected official of Stratford. Which I believe makes him a “public personality”.

  15. 15 jezebel282

Really? We thought you just had to show up. There are so many…..

  16. 16 Rockannand

Ron what difference does it make? You belong to the RTC and know who did this and how they act. I learned today that the reason they did it this way was because they were irate at the posts and comments on the WPCA SGA Facebook page. Dave Fuller and Fredette have been trolling thre for months copying the comments for use now.

They feel totally justified in doing this. So how do you feel being a member of an org with leadership that condones this behavior?

Do you want to see guys like Henrick and Poisson in Council Chambers again with their attitudes?

  17. 17 ronmoreau

    Rock,
Other than being some members of the RTC, the Political Action Committee that put out that piece are not representative of the RTC as a whole.. You do not see my name or many other RTC members as contributors to this PAC. I doubt that most of those that did contribute had no input or knowledge of that piece being sent out.

As a representative of 2nd district Republicans on the RTC I have no business being involved in any of the other districts candidate choices. I may not agree with their choices but it’s not my call. Their respective district Republicans elected them to represent them to make those decisions at the RTC level.

  18. 18 Rockannand

Thanks Ron. If the DTC was half as organized for elections as the RTC is, they would would win most every time.

  19. 19 Rockannand

  22. 22 stfdprofessor1

A great list of places to BOYCOTT!!!

  23. 24 ronmoreau

    Federal,State or local. Same crap.

  24. 25 Rockannand

Wow Ron you sure are down on everything. The only change can happen locally. If you are that much of a nego, then I am sorry for you because you couldn’t be more wrong. I guess i expected more from you.

  25. 26 jezebel282

    Rock,

We think Ron was proposing a rhetorical question and we think he is trying to fix it. Unfortunately, Ron is confronted by people working in the opposite direction who believe citizens do not have the right to vote a that the most money wins. They would be the ones listed above and led by Harkins/Decilio.

Poor Lou thinks he is being personally attacked if you happen to disagree with him about anything. His life must be miserable.

“DeCilio added that people who oppose the sale of the plant have attacked sale supporters online through social media and in comment sections…”
    http://www.stratfordstar.com/42594/political-mailer-stirs-anger/

Being factually inaccurate or flat out wrong and being cited for that is not an “attack”. Being identified as a paid spokesperson having a personal financial motive is also not a personal attack. No one has been attacked on this site and rebuttal comments are always welcomed.

“…would mail out similar attacks if they had the money to do so.”

We think Mr. Decilio is a bit out of bounds here. Not everyone uses Mr. Decilio’s tactics. In fact, hardly anyone.

“They don’t hesitate to pull the trigger when it comes to [posting] something online,” he said.”

In reality, “they” do. Information posted on this site is thoroughly researched and referenced. The balance of the content is clearly labelled as opinion. It is actually everyone’s right to hold and express an opinion, Mr. Decilio. Even if it is not identical to yours. But, because of the vengeful way politics are practiced in Stratford, in order to protect the reputations and sometimes livelihoods of citizens with differing opinions than the Administration’s this site maintains and even encourages the anonymity of anyone who posts here.

“Anytime someone has an opposing view, they attack.”

Once again, disagreeing and disputing are not the same as attacking.

“DeCilio also denounced Philips’ claim of not voting on matters affecting her spouse”

Denounced? Is that the same as attack?

“Raguskus is a public official as an elected member of the Stratford Democratic Town Committee”

We need a little clarification here, Mr. Decilio. If any member of a Town Committee is a public official, is it OK then to publish a record of fines, tax payments, delinquencies, arrests and disputes of RTC members? We look forward to you doing so.

  26. 27 mikereynolds

Um, not to burst your bubble or ego, but I think he was really referring to the WPCA-Get Answers page on Facebook.

  27. 28 jezebel282

You’re right. I’m sure no one in Town Hall pays attention to this site at all. Whew!

  28. 29 stfdprofessor1

I just got my latest love letter in the mail today from the “vote yes” juveniles, complete in a lovely little envelope that was sent from Westchester, New York. I will spare the details of their propaganda but every time I see the Police Chief, Fire Chief, their deputies and the other municipal employees the first thing that will I will think of is that juvenile flyer. I hold their judgement in serious question, not to mention the judgement of the person who hired them…oh that’s right- he has no morals either. Don’t believe me, just ask his wife.

Hang in there Tina, they wouldn’t be doing this if they weren’t afraid of you.

To the PD and FD, you have totally lost my respect because of the actions of your leaders and I’m sure I’m not alone.

  29. 30 mikereynolds

“You’re right. I’m sure no one in Town Hall pays attention to this site at all. Whew!”

I didn’t say they don’t. I’m saying that I believe Mr. Decilio wasn’t referring to this blog in his comments to The Stratford Star.

  30. 31 Rockannand

The beauty of publishing these names is to find out other intriguing relationships like the one involving the Stratford Chamber of Commerce. Seems that 7 of the Board members gave to the YES PAC – Tim Bishop, Jim Conner/Bridgeport Fittings, Mary Beth Bigley/Main St Mortgage, Patty Gallagher/Milford Bank, John Harkins, Karen Kaiser and Christopher Pia. Sure makes that endorsement from the Chamber seem pretty thin and worthless.

  31. 32 Rockannand

What’s so nice to finally see is just how transparent Lou Deceitful is when it comes to his despicable behavior. Many have confronted him the past few days over the mailer and he is responded he had nothing to do with it. It is clear he masterminded it along with harkins and just used Fuller and Fredette-about-it to gather the “data” from the Facebook page. Fuller did the same thing back in April when he “joined” the WPCA SGA group long enough (one day) to copy various comments and send to the State Election board to complain about me and a few others. Fortunately, Hartford did with that what they have done with Lou’s other frivolous complaints about private citizens … NOTHING.

It is so nice Lou to see that your thin skin and tin ear leads you to do tactically STUPID (yes Lou that is what i am calling your actions) acts like those mailers. Your using the “Facebook posts and comments” excuse to justify your actions? Its f’ing FACEBOOK, not a letter to the editor or a mailer drop in everyone’s mailbox in town! What’s the matter with you. Something is seriously wrong when we have elected officials who think they can do this without consequences. What arrogance, what hubris.

The blow back all over town has been swift. For the people and businesses that contributed to this despicable PAC, your personal and professional reputations will take major league hits in the week ahead as the shaming continues. Since you and your sidekick Johnny H have no shame, i will leave it to all those names above to think about what has happened.

All of you owe this town, your families, friends and the targets of those mailers an apology. I’m ashamed to think i considered some of you as friends.

  32. 33 Rockannand

So on that article in theStar Friday night about the mailer, i am having a very nice tit for tat with someone names Welldressed1. He seems to be following for sometime all over and thinks i am very hasty and unfair to Lou and Harkins among others. Since he won’t divulge who he is i will post his comment earlier today on the Star article:

    WellDressed1 Henry Bruce • 5 hours ago
Henry, let’s be frank. You and your supporters used social media for many months to trash people online. That includes the Stratford Elections, WPCA and MoveStratford Facebook pages as well as the Stratford Star online and that “Stratford Politics” wordpress blog. It’s extremely hypocritical of you to now take a stand against “bullying” when your own nasty comments were posted for months. I’m sure if you had the finances to produce a townwide mailer, you would’ve. I don’t feel bad for anybody involved.

isn’t that special. Anyone here not know who i am here? He’s says i am disguising myself, while he won’t come out.

  33. 34 jezebel282

    Rock,

“Anyone here not know who i am here? ”

We think it begs the question. Does anyone care?

The low, dirty, rotten way politics are played in this town almost requires that any opinions that differ with this mayor or the previous one be expressed anonymously.

This is particularly true for people employed by the Town. And, fortunately for us, most employees of the Town are honest hard working people who hate the bullying, side deals, unwarranted raises and waste of Town funds that they see going on. That is why this site has always maintained posters’ identity.

And as we see from the mayor’s last mailing, you don’t have to be an employee.

  34. 35 jezebel282

And in the parallel universe where most of Harkins/Decilio’s team live, we have this communication:

“I choose to post anonymously out of fear of having my personal information posted on sites like Facebook and Jezebel’s blog, as it has happened to others in the past”

We are fine with this person remaining anonymous. But please, let’s not resort to lying. We cannot recall any post here that released anyone’s personal information. Ever.

  35. 36 Rockannand

    Jez,
“We think it begs the question. Does anyone care?”

Actually no, not for those that post here, obviously for those who don’t it does. I still find it funny that they consider being called out on social media trashing and bullying them. But harassing people with mailers or reporting citizens to the State who oppose them is perfectly fine. They have deluded themselves into thinking that their actions are justified, that strong arming businesses to pay to play (YES PAC donations) or threatening town employees with their job if they don’t go along with their shady plans (Susan Pawluck and accepting the petition) is how the game is played. They want me and others to basically keep saying the emperor has no clothes.

  36. 37 Rockannand

So we are reminded that Stratford actually HAS a Code of Ethics. But since we don’t have an Ethics Commission anymore, there is no way to enforce, Seems we had this when we had a Town Manager form of Govt. If asked, i am sue the Mayor would say that the $23,000 in contribution from businesses to his YES PAC (sorry, Fredette, Fuller and Molloy run it) are gifts made from the goodness of their hearts. I wonder what those businesses think of their “gifts” now that they have seen the mailer?

From the Town’s Code of Ethics:
    http://www.townofstratford.com/…/Town_of_Stratford_Ethics_C…
    ß 5-27 B. Quid Pro Quo
    1. No person shall offer to give a public official or employee, or his or her household, or domestic partner, immediate family or a business with which he or she is associated, anything of value, including but not limited to a gift, loan, political contribution, reward or promise of future
employment, based on any understanding that a vote, official action or judgment of the public official or employee or candidate for public office would be or had been influenced thereby.
    2. No public official or employee shall solicit or accept anything of value, including but not limited to a gift, loan, political contribution, reward or promise of future employment based on any understanding that a vote, official action or judgment of the public official or employee would be or
    had been influenced thereby.

  37. 38 missgreeneyes118

Harkins has never experienced the rejection of the voters.
Not due to hard work or brilliance, but because he was in the right place at the right time.
Tomorrow’s vote on the sewage plant sale is also a referendum on Harkins performance as mayor.
I think the voters will overwhelmingly reject his policies and practices, along with the tactics of his administration.

  38. 39 jezebel282

    Rock,

Once again you demonstrate the flaws of our broken Town Charter.

Aside from the unlimited income given to the Town Attorney ( this is the first thing a new Council should fix.), there is no downside or punishment for a mayor for anything.

Nowhere in this Charter is there any consequence for a mayor’s bad behavior. No suspensions, no reprimands, no warnings, no fines or reductions in pay. The singular remedy other than waiting four years to vote him out is a veto override. Lets hope a new Council uses that power early and often.

  39. 40 jezebel282

    Green,

“I think the voters will overwhelmingly reject his policies and practices, along with the tactics of his administration.”

    Without question.

However the message should be clear. A large turnout will provide a very clear message.

Don’t depend on your neighbor’s vote. Get out and vote for yourself. It’s your money.

  40. 41 1cyclops

VOTE! It is notably important this year. The majority made up of the registered voters has the final say.

  41. I have no opinion either way on this issue, but want to stress. The United States of America is NOT a Democracy, but in fact a Constitutional Republic. The differences are huge and the fact so many of us do not know the difference is the main factor in Government officials so easily being able to amass more power over we the people. Ignorance is the downfall of our Constitutional Republic and our elected leaders count on it to survive.
