A Little Rebellion…

“Malo periculosam, libertatem quam quietam servitutem”! Translated, “I prefer the tumult of liberty to the quiet of servitude.” A quote from Thomas Jefferson, to James Madison, in 1787. Also in that quote, Thomas Jefferson said that “societies exist under three forms sufficiently distinguishable.”  Of the three, the one seems most fair and just is a government “wherein the will of every one has a just influence.” Right now, we don’t have that at all, we have what Thomas Jefferson called a “government of force.” It’s a government of “wolves over sheep.”

  • Did we not vote for the new council members to be a voice for us?
  • Did we not believe they would not take advantage of their position and forget the people of Stratford?

With both of those answers being “YES” I ask the good people of Stratford, what are we to do? The only thing we can do: let’s make history again.

Mayor Harkins and some of his followers felt one sting of the people when the WPCA sale was voted down. I think it’s time he and the other five members of the Town Council who gave Stratford taxpayers and residents another screwing, feel a mighty big sting now.

  1. What kind of sting? There’s no local voting for years. And these Councilmen and mayor don’t care about what we vote for anyway. Didn’t they just make that clear?

Kild, let’s see, the word around Stratford yesterday was that a recall could be in the works. If successful, that would be a serious sting. And, if that happens, maybe there could be a budget amendment. That would be a sting.

For too many years, it hasn’t mattered whether or not the people of Stratford could afford these increases. For too many years, the network of friends and family have gotten serious increases all paid for by the blood of taxpayers. What more do many have to give?

Who are you proposing to recall?

The talk around the coffee machine during breaks is that a recall could start with the Council Chair. I think her constituents have lost faith in her abilities to work in their best interests. It’s also been rumored Phil Young and David Harden didn’t even review the proposed budget. If that is the case, they just voted with a rubber-stamp. But, this is just coffee break discussion. It was discussed over the weekend that the Council Chair made a “deal” with the Mayor in order to save some of his precious personnel (even though a Town Manager got away with much less) in order to create a new position. I guess we will see how this unfolds over the next few days or weeks.

  5. I’m leading the charge, we should have the paperwork in by Friday morning. i love the Jefferson Quote. It’s exactly how myself and others feel. Beth Daponte should be recalled, but Harden and Young should be recalled as well. They blatantly disregarded their constituents wishes. Mark Dumas’s budget should have passed at the very least a compromise should have been struck between that and Stephanies budget.

  6. Good luck, Mark. The very best scenario would be if Beth realized that whatever qualifications she thought she would bring to the Town Council are not working out and she would resign and go away. She really hasn’t passed her probationary period, I would call it “results-based” performance.

Mark, thank you for your effort! The people need more people to step up against what has been going on for years. Perusing FB, I noticed so many that are absolutely angry. I’m not a District 1 resident, but if I was, I’d be up-in-arms and making sure Ms. Daponte heard me loud and clear. It appears she has her head in the sand and John Harkins is punishing the people for the failed attempted to sell off one of Stratford’s assets.

Keep up the good work and keep us informed as to your progress!
